Wood caper

Post by Tubetwang »

well...i'm embarking on a new passion...wood working and inlay work...

Scavenging the internet 10 hours a day, ordering loads of tools and books, reading like crazy.

We had an 1863 Weber piano in the house that nobody wanted...my daughter had lost interest in piano after 4 years of weekly lessons...

So i took it apart and kept big pieces of hardwood and all of the Ivory.

Anyway, have a look at this video if you like wood...

Ok, Just can't pass this opportunity up.

I didn't take the wife to any saw mills on our honeymoon but, there was a search for wood involved.
I provided all the wood needed and still do to this day. :D

I'm not as good as I once was but, I'm as good once as I ever was.
I'm old but I ain't dead yet. :D

In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird , and they take Prozac to make it normal.

Yeah I posted that series of videos over at a guitar forum I belong to.
Pretty wild.

Did you see the one that shows his portable saw mill?

That is quite a piece of machinery.

Zebra wood steps!

Have you ever worked with Kauri wood before?

kauri wood

Post by murphyterence »

Never worked with it yet. Supposedly the same mass and feel as cherry. There can be issues with it if it is not dried correctly/enough as it comes out of the ground 100% saturated. The biggest difference in working with it once dried over other woods is is to achieve the best results sand it down to at least 1200 grit to get the shimmer effect.

I have built two cabs from Kauri and it is not my favorite wood to work with. For wood that can be upwards of 50,000 years old I expected it to be hard. It is surprisingly delicate and dents/ scrapes easily.
I sanded the cabs up to 2400 grit before staining and they really do look 3D.

Post some pictures when you finish the project.

I wonder if using that Minwax wood hardner would help that wood any?

I know guys that have used it on pine tele bodies and they say it helps.
