The clips are great and as anticipated, both certainly have their distinct characters! That settles it, there is no question of choosing, I want both...
Join the club. It's only got two members right now, but...
I am more than happy to wait for the "final" (is there such a thing?) tweaks to get an even smoother thing happening.
I've just been trying to get the PS dropping resistors right so that the plates of the 6SN7GTB are at about 340V which Jon and I found we liked the best in the October Studio R&D units

, and trying to get the PI and preamp stages where the wreck should be. I think I'm just about there. I'm going to try a 1K as the first dropping resistor, and that should just about do it. I'll also be increasing the post PI dividers a bit as I think the output tube is still getting driven a bit hard.
After that we'll just have to wait until a few more or built for some sort of concensus to happen as to any further "refinements" that need to happen.
Maybe I can talk Glen into a free test drive if he's interested.
I probably have all the parts to go modular, with a complete wreckless and a seperate Studio pre-amp to switch into it. (slight drool forming, as his head spins...). Do you think an external pre will be a problem for noise or hum?
I'm a quiet freak. I do everything I can to minimize buzz and hum on these amps. You can put up with a higher noise floor in a bigger amps, but not these. My intuition tell me that you will get more noise, but personal experience tells me that everyone has a different idea of what "too noisey" is.
Cliff: which brands of tubes were used for the Studio clips?
Isn't progress great?

From Jon:
I had 1 tall and 1 short Raytheon 6SN7GTB, one is silver topped, the other is black. They are both used, rather than NOS. For the preamp tubes, I've been using 2 Baldwin branded Sylvania 12ax7's, and 1 Hammond (RCA, I think) as the PI. Really, just a hodge-podge.
As for me, I use Mullard's in the preamp and PI, and a RCA blackplate for the powertube. Very creamy. Nails the bluesbreaker tone when coupled with an Alinco Blue or Gold. Swapping in Brian's favorites (the Sylvania or Tung-Sol triangle plate tubes) give it a more agressive character in the upper mids and high freqs making it sound like a bit later Marshall. Brian likes the clarity and chimeyness of those tubes better than the RCA, but that's because he hasn't spent the money on a Alinco yet.
In the Wrecked Studio, it's the NOS Tung-Sol 6SN7GYB hands down. I don't have a Sylvania yet, so I don't have an opnion about it. I'm using Mullard's in the pre and PI of that amp as well. Someone is supposed to be sending me a few BB's and Tungsram's to test out though.
But everyone is different, so YMMV.
And I almost forgot to mention, the October studio sound quite acceptable with current production JJ's in the preamp and PI and the new Tung-sol 6SN7GTB's. That's what I ship in my kits.
