Saw Sonny live a while back and he killed.
That fretting behind the slide thing--I spent a lot of the show going "How the hell did he do that?"
Great player, very nice man, excellent band.

I was just listening to Alvin Lee's 'The Bluest Blues'. Wow what a great song. George Harrison plays the first solo with the slide. George is so under rated. His solo is a fricking masterpiece of tone and melody.

I don't think there is anyway to overrate him

Leo I was gonna say dickie but I was scared that everyone would make fun of me.

I don't think any of the guitarist fom skynyrd got enough credit. I had a tape of skynrd doing workin man blues and Steve Gaines absolutely tears it up.At one point Ronny says damn sounds like Roy.
I'm all in Cbass . Agreed! The Skynyrd guitarist were something extraordinary to me. King, Collins, Rossington, and later Gaines. Put three guitarist of that caliber in one band and then to be discipline enough to stay out of each others way like they did is so difficult to do.

and Dickie could make a guitar and amp just sing. great stuff.

I also think George was under rated.

Thank you for sharing this. I have never heard it before. I guess what we normally consider great guitarists are those that developed a unique style, where any solo you could say, "that's Hendrix, that's Page, that's Beck."

But I guess starting this thread, I am more interested in guys that played what the song needed. Those are the masters that go undetected. You say, "I don't know who played this, but it was perfect for this song." George and John did that quite well. Elliot Randall on 'Reeling in the Years' is another.

David Gilmore is not underrated, but he is one of those that creates a solo where you say, this solo perfectly enforces the mood and theme of this song. Find a better lead to Comfortably Numb.

I guess it is the difference in attitude in wanting to be a worshipped guitarist and wanting to be a great musician.

If the song really needed you to play two notes, would you do it?

BB King has said more with a few notes than Yngwie Malmsteen has yet to say.

I'm rambling:

Yngwie falls to the other side of the camp: he is completely overrated.

I submit that Al Anderson fits this definition. I'm pretty sure he is the artist that played the beautiful solo on Bob Marley's No Woman, No Cry from the Wailers 1975 London Lyceum live recording, which is the one on the "Legend" collection. It is just perfect, and surprisingly the audience doesn't applaud afterward. Some interesting back story on Anderson and video is here: http://www.jambands.com/features/2010/0 ... d-onward?1 But give a listen to the 1975 live recording.

Yusssss! +1 Gilmour : for economy of notage & excellent tone always

+1 Al Anderson : Got to mix NRBQ twice while he was guitarist and wow, he's the man!

+1 each to all the Steely Dan guitarists. I'd like to have a play-by-play guide to who played what.

Wingnut? Ha , yes deep in the overrated bin, mostly by his terrible ego.

Fantastic player (no one does a better rhino emulation on guitar)! So is Robert Fripp. Saw both of 'em with King Crimson on the Discipline tour, along with Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. Outstanding!

Then there's Al Anderson, or Big Al as he's known, the guitar player for NRBQ. One of the greats.
Stephen Bruton has always been under the radar as well.
Oops, forgot to read the other post. Al's been covered.

The Larry Carlton solo on Kid Charlemagne is mind-blowing. He says the solo on the album was the second take. Few players could pull that off in only two takes. Sublime!

Then it is the OTHER Al Anderson after all.
I think I learned that "No Woman..." solo at some point back in the day. Very beautiful.
