Thank you for sharing this. I have never heard it before. I guess what we normally consider great guitarists are those that developed a unique style, where any solo you could say, "that's Hendrix, that's Page, that's Beck."
But I guess starting this thread, I am more interested in guys that played what the song needed. Those are the masters that go undetected. You say, "I don't know who played this, but it was perfect for this song." George and John did that quite well. Elliot Randall on 'Reeling in the Years' is another.
David Gilmore is not underrated, but he is one of those that creates a solo where you say, this solo perfectly enforces the mood and theme of this song. Find a better lead to Comfortably Numb.
I guess it is the difference in attitude in wanting to be a worshipped guitarist and wanting to be a great musician.
If the song really needed you to play two notes, would you do it?
BB King has said more with a few notes than Yngwie Malmsteen has yet to say.
