testing

Post by groovenut »

Hey all-

Any suggestions for testing this with a DMM before puggin it in? What should the measured resistances be for each switch position?

Thanks,

Law

It sounds better when it's louder?

Post by RJ Guitars »

Well, this has been a long enduring thread and there ought to be a bunch of airbrakes out there. I'm curious what people think of them??

I've been attempting to get bedroom volume and big league tone for a few years now and I'm just about to convince myself that it's not gonna happen... not to say I haven't got some cool tones at reasonable volume, just seems my ears tell me that two watts cranked isn't a scale model of 50 watts cranked.

When I get the airbrake to squeeze down a Fender Deluxe, it seems sorta buzzy and not all that cool... as I back off the brake, the tone just seems to get better as the volume gets louder.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Do you think it works better on some circuits than others?

I have a Dr. Z Airbrake. I disconnected the orange drop cap in mine. If anything that seems to ADD to the buzz at lower levels. Still, the Airbrake really isn't that good turned down low and for that I actually think the THD is a little better. However the Airbrake does work well with lower wattage amps where you only need to take off say 2-6 db. Then you can even tweak the resistor clamps inside to totally dial in what you need.

To my ears the Airbrake is brighter and clearer, and the THD darker. Sometimes I pick between the 2 just on tone. Sometimes however I've even run both in series when I run a 100 watt Marshall. I'll run the THD 1st, and take off about 4 or 8 db. Then I run the Airbrake to take it down just a couple more clicks never getting to the reostat setting which I don't really like.

That's my take on it.

Glen-

Did you use an attenuator on the video clips you did recently? It doesn't sound like there is anything between the wreck and the cab, but I thought I would ask. Beautiful stuff by the way!

Thanks,
