Which 6G6 Bassman?

Post by LarryLarry »

I'm thinking of building a 6G6 Bassman and I'm not sure which to build. I had a few of the blonde Bassmans with presence controls back in the day and loved the gain, but I'm not sure which circuit they were.

I have the PT and OT, but will need to get a choke. Anyone know which choke it calls for? 4HY?

I'm gathering parts for two of them, basically a 6G6B with tube rectifier option. One will be wired as G6 with a tube rectifier and have the s/s rectifier plug in and my personal one will toggle between s/s and tube rectifier.

The choke is 22699( 4H, 90ma), same as the Twin

I recommend 6g6b, the 6g6a bass circuit clips and farts badly when turned up high

I love the sound of the 6G6B. I've never built any of the others, althoughI did hear Lublin's SF Bassman, and it rocked hard also (I know, that one is not a 6G6).

I have built a fairly traditional 6G6B, although with bigger iron, and a SS rectifier slug plugged into the tube socket (it can run with a GZ34 also) and it is wonderful. I have also built a Bass channel only version as a 1x12 combo with diode rectification. The amp tone is great, although I have been having a serious hum problem since it was built that I haven't yet figured out (obviously not the circuit's fault.

The Bass channel is like having a really cool Marshall varient, while the Normal channel is like a fat, somewhat agressive Fender tone.

Anyone know of a layout and/or schematic that are decent quality? All that I find are blurry...

Hope this helps.

By the way - a VVR works nicely with this circuit if you are so inclined.

Awesome, thanks! I have a Weber WO22798 PT that looks up to the task, and a nice big OT from a Knight mono amp that ran 2x5881s and a GZ34, with 4/8/16 secondaries. Gotta get the choke though...

UPDATE, just bought 1 of his chokes for $17 shipped...

Anyone know if it's ok to use a IN5399G diode (1000v, 1.5A) in place of a IN4007 (1000v, 1A)?

Is the treble pot on the normal channel (350k/70k tap) available, or is there another way to sub it?

Thanks in advance.

I've built many 6g6b-type circuits utilizing just the clean/guitar channel. Great sounding circuit for sure. Add reverb, and bam, tonal heaven using a gretsch or tele.
