Yes that plays toward my next question - does the PI "flavor" the tone in any way or is it just a mild boost? maybe a 12AU7 or something like that might do the trick?

or run the pre-amp on much lower voltages so it clips earlier this will essentially change the bias point of each stage but I've got a nice single ended wreck I made for a friend that runs on a B+ of about 230v.

That's my inclination as well - use that "extra" half-12AX7 and get some noise rejection as a windfall.

Any reason NOT to parallel V1???

While we're at it, does anyone know the tube count in a DLM? If there is a fake PI using a full 12AX7, there would have to be three 12AX7s.

I just saw the answer in a parallel thread:

Thanks, Mark!

Tube count:

2 ECC83 (GT Yugo)
1 EL 34 (Mullard xf2 )
1 GZ 34 (Mullard)

So no full PI in that build.

I am disappointed to see that GZ-34 since I was hoping that we might be able to dismiss that expense of trying to find another one of those.

se trainwrecks of various octal outputs

Post by zambo »

i built a 6l6 and an el34 and a 6v6 se version of the express as well as a 2x el84 liverpool. the se doesnt compress as much or clean up quite as well but they are pretty wicked anyway. i use my 5 watt 6v6 for bar gigs. it may be a little more than 5 watts , not sure. my fake pi is a simple gain stage using 47k plate r and 22k cathode r . same decoupling cap as stock pi in an express. works pretty good. my camera stinks but here is a link to youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uOlMVAybFw is the el34.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXE4Dofpieo is a live recording in my local drinking establishment with the 6v6 5watt.

"GZ-34" in a 5-8w amp spells "stiff" to me and reinforces the idea that it's alright to go SS. Go ahead and calculate any delta V that you're going to garner from using a tube rectifier. Nadda. Nil. Zip.

RJ, I found a thread on the DLM where you had an unverified schematic. Im wondering if you've put together a working DLM since then and if so what kind of changes did you end up making.

+1.

You'll be able to get a degree of power supply compression when you really push the output stage into a heavy square-wave duty cycle, but you could replicate that with a a resistor, and it most likely wouldn't sound good by that point anyway even if it had the drive to reach that point.
