Is the hole supposed to be round or oval on a 1x12?

Mine is oval ... but in an open back it can be square like the old Fenders ... doesn't really matter. I think that the sound is a bit more open with sounds bouncing off the walls from the back. Now if you are porting the front, dimensions are more important.

But the EVM12L sounds good in the open back.

I think I'm gonna go for the open back version. It'll be easier to make it the right dimensions for the head (Bassman 10 chassis). Thanks for the input, everyone.

I like EVMs too but the weight kills me. Does anyone have experience with some of the new lighter alloy speakers, Jensens?
The one Dumble I've peeked into had some curious markings on the EVM that look like impedance measurements. It looked like HAD found a speaker closer to 4 ohms even though it was marked 8. Would that make sense since the output is a Twin tranny?

It makes sense, since a Twin OT's secundary wiring is made for two 8 ohm speakers in parallel => 4 ohm.

Seems like with the open back you can do away with the female 1/4" and just have a male come out the port. Any drawbacks or pluses to having one less Jack?

I loved the EV's in my open back combos, the 1x12 porteds had better low end at the expense of beaming more and sounding more closed in, you just run the bass a few notches up on the open backs. The porteds can be more portable (smaller) if that's a concern.

Thats the way they are. It's probably 8 because i've been using 8 ohm EV12L's for decades and all mine read closer to 4 then 8. Usually around 5.6 ohms, which is what my current one reads. Also, all speakers tend to read lower than thier rating, so if it reads OVER 4 then I believe that alone should mean it's not a 4. There may be exceptions, but i have never seen a speaker reading over it's rating.

An '8 ohm' recone kit also reads around 5 ohm:

Don't take ohm values too literal. A speaker's impedance will vary greatly with frequency, having up to 30 ohm at its resonance frequency.

Off course, you shouldn't connect a 2 ohm speaker cab (like a 4x10" super og bassmann) to a 16 ohm amplifier jack socket. However, you can easily connect a 2 ohm cab til a 4 ohm amp jack.

I set my impedance selector where it sounds best with my 1x12 EV thiele cabinet.

TL806

Post by roknroll »

On the Electrovoice plans for the TL806 cabinet part #5 (port cover) seems to be deliberately missing from many of the pics online, including Mesa Boogie's thiele cab. Am I missing something? Is there a reason for this?
Thanks

The port cover alters the low end response.
I believe for guitar frequencies, it is best left off.

I prefer adding an extra jack so I can daisy chain a second cab when needed.

For some reason this pic makes me think of "Little Shop of Horrors" - FEED ME!

how do you like the swamp thang amp ? FWIW, I've heard a few swamp works models and they all sound either too dark or may have grid clipping issues.
