By request, pics of the Peavey / Dumble transplant

Post by Bob-I »

In another thread I was asked if I could post pics of the Peavey I converted to a Dumble.

There's a ton of space in here so I put the relays on the main board. It's a basic high plate HRM with reverb. I used an ECL86 as a reverb tube, and the orignal Peavey tank, which sounds great. The ECL86 is basically an EL84 and 1/2 12AX7. I used the pentode as a driver, triode for recovery. AT first I kept frying the tube socket with screen arcing, but I upped the screen resistor to 330K and all's good with the reverb.

To listen to it, click on my band's link below and start the jukebox at the top. Pretty poor recordings, just an ambient recorder sitting in front of the band in a loud bar. What guitar I'm playing is a crapshoot, I usually take 5-6 guitars to a gig, but the signal path is always clean, just volume pedal > wah > amp. Speakers are Emi Tonker and Swamp Thang, 16 ohms in parallel. Tubes vary as well, but I think I was running JJ KT-77's and JJ ECC83, in V1 and V2, Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the PI, Phillips ECL86 for reverb.

I typically set the eq to, T=10:00, M=2:00, B=2:00. Gain and drive on about 1:00 and volume at about 9:00. I often get the sound man complaining I'm not loud enough

Oh... and since the questions will come, here's the vocalist....

What's really funny too, is she's 4'11" and I'm 6'5". I look like I'm standing on a chair next to her.

She actually draws a nice group of Cougars too.

But we're off topic. The faceplate is a simple Kinkos laminated posterboard. I drew it up on Visio and they printed it, stuck it on with double faced tape. For awhile I used it with the stock Peavey plate, a real conversation piece, but I got tired of it looking like I pulled it off the junk heap.

Pearl, but yea, really cool kit. Pretty funny watching him drive to and from gigs with this kit in his pickup. He doesn't even take the toms off the kicks

Sounds great. How does it sound with P90s?

What amp was originally in that chassis? It is huge! Looks like you could fit about two other amps in there.

Nice looking!

And the amp ain't bad either.

You changed up the layout quite a bit on that.

Did you utilize a star ground for that huge chassis?
How is it for noise?

I put a Fralin in that Epi Jr in the pic, sounds amazing.

I was a VT60, SS preamp and 2x6L6 output. There's enough room in that chassis to pack a lunch.

Funny thing is, I paid $5 on ebay locally for that amp, gutted it and sold the non-working preamp board for $10.

No, there's no star ground. The ground system took some time to get right. The preamp grounds are all near the input, power amp near the filter caps, screens near the tubes. The relay supply grounds were a tad troublesome, but by grounding it near the supply, and the footswitch by the jack it quieted right down.

The amp is as quiet as a mouse.

Bob; looks like your conversion hrm has the same color taps on the peavey trannies as I have.

Most of my parts are in now. I'm stripping the amp. I'm gonna do a HRM with built-in dlator.

Can you confirm this is the way you are using your PT wires?:

red-red= +/-370V(power supply)
yellow-yellow= 6,3v(filaments)
purple-purple= 56v (bias)
orange-orange/white-orange(relay power)= 20-0-20v
Are you doing anything with the orange/white center tap or are you just doing a bridge followed by a 7812 voltage regulator?

Thanks for all the pix! I'm inspired :D
