Marshall builds...2204, Plexi, or 18w? Marshall guys...
Marshall guys...
After finding some really nice Dumble tones I'm thinking about doing a Marshall build at the end of the summer.
I'm curious to what I should go with. I'll research and source this nicely, but your experience has always guided me well.
I had a 2204 for awhile and really loved that amp, I am thinking about building one. Those mid to late 70s JMPs with some greenbacks and a nice Lester is just heaven. But should I go all out and try a Plexi build or something smaller with a trem instead?
I know lots of you guys have experience...where should I start in Marshalland. Build complexity and sourcing parts is not an issue!!! (Well I do need a source for the mustards).
Thoughts would be great.
Thanks,
Taylor

I love 4 holers but I always use a little signal boost in front. 30 years of that! So, I ended up with many variations of a theme since October, when I decided not to be afraid of electricty anymore. Heh
Most useful is likely a bright channel from a common plexi-era amp, and the cascaded amp you liked so much. You can have a simple two switch operation between JTM-JMP-800. Every important amp in one. (ifya askme!)
Funny that we complained about the master volume amps forever then I ended up with a couple amps running 3 masters. Marshall made changes along the way that reflected the music at the time, so it's only fair I end up loving what they finally did to the early circuit with the 800 series amps. Refining a theme.
I'm all excited now..
Oh, in conclusion, 100w amp. Plexi and cascade with maybe a switch on the plexi side to get JTM for $20 extra.

I knew the mule master would come to life from the depths of English crunch! You couldn't resist...I know it!
Yes how do I build all three at once?
I'm looking at some of Richie's layouts with trem, I know they are tough ones

36 watt for me, great base for modding and playing around, i sold my last one but have most of the parts for another squirelled away, the last one had diode clipping on the drive channel with switchable caps for a bit more drive, the guy that had it of me uses it in a local band ,

I have a couple super trems and the fact that the crappy trem even works is black magic unto itself. I can honestly say that I have never on purpose used Marshall trem except for showing an owner that it's weak or doesn't work as a negotiating ploy.
This is so simple. Build a super lead power and output section up to the PI entrance. Use .1uf couplers in PI, then simple enough ala carte the front end (1 chan or 2) from any number of schematics.
There is a switchable cascade idea that does most of what all the 'glory years' amps do, but I think it's a better way to do an extra tube on the front end and make one channel into a dedicated cascade, and have less doodie on the simple stock bright channel. That channel just needs a switch, a resistor, and a cap to put it in JTM territory.
If you want quality to start, as I am pretty sure you do, Brian Wallace , or Chris Merren for transformers, Brian for chassis, or Metro if they are splitting orders. Go look at the classifieds over on Metro. There is a member named Brian there who makes beautiful boards, if you don't mind someone else doing the work.
Stray away from the purists. I used to be one!
All that said, you might build one of the master kits from Triode and be really happy for about half the money in the end. Didn't someone here build a Triode kit?
Mark?

I always find that thread interesting.
Where did you get those Dale's from? I can't decide what to put in the princess Major overhaul. Takman or those?

I ordered those Dales from Metro amp before he stopped selling parts. I had them in the parts box waiting to go in an amp.
Valvestorm.com is a place that has some of the hard to find parts like mustards. He doesn't have the .022 but does have .027, which in my book is close enough.

I'm closing in on a 50W JMP50/JCM800 homage amp, twice over because the circuit is pretty much a copy of Jana's recent (and beautiful!) piece that's linked above. Mine's in an rj Express-size chassis (which is the same size as a small-box), but the layout is a morph of my recent non-traditional Express. I'm using Marstran transformers, and all new parts. I'm thinking power-up in will be in about a week...

Re: Marshall builds...2204, Plexi, or 18w? Marshall guys...
It won't be long... I've determined that the PT and OT can snuggle up to one another Trainwreck-style and still keep a platonic relationship, so my layout can stay largely intact. I'm very glad of that because any effort to split them up just trashed all the feng shui.Jana wrote:Martin, I'm anxious to hear a report.

The best Marshalls almost hum, almost squeal, and almost feel like they are almost exploding
