New Amp Build

Post by Jana »

Some photos of my latest amp build. There is a story with this build that I am sure most of you can relate to:

I had an experimenter amp in the red enclosure that has seen years of mods. I would try something, play it a while, drill some more holes, try something else, etc. Well, the chassis was becoming swiss cheese and the innards were a mess. So, I decided to rebuild it on a fresh chassis to clean it up. The plan was just a new chassis and *maybe* a few fresh parts. I had RJ build me a custom sized blank chassis. One thing led to another--just a couple more new parts won't hurt anything, lol. Fast forward to the completed amp and the only thing I reused from the old amp was the enclosure and, drum roll, one 47K 1 watt resistor!

Yep, you might as well use fresh parts in a new build. :-)

LMAO! Looks nice now. I have one approaching retirement too.

Umm whats the brown things where resistors usually go? haha

Wow Jana - I didn't think I would ever see lacing cord again.
I'm stunned.
I had to do that to a big harness until it looked good & didn't loosen if cut anywhere. Ass kicked - literally - & do it again until you get it right.
Anyone else here have this skill ?

+1 on the cable lacing. Makes this very artful build something special. Kudos, Jana!

I don't know that you can find anyone to show you how, but, if you can learn it from a "book" it is all there for all of us:

Very nicely done, Jana, love to see that kind of thing! I can also see that 47k, in the bias circuit. Do you have some sentimental attachment to it?

Beautiful build Jana!

Love a clean gut shot and the lacing is icing on the cake. :D

Thank you everyone for the compliments. :)

Martin, Yes, that 47K resistor in the bias circuit has somehow traversed numerous amps--each time winding up in a different place in the circuit. Who knows where it will go next time. :)

I have to say more about the chassis from RJ--I had him quote and build a custom sized chassis for me. When I got it I was amazed at the perfection and quality of it: perfect bends, very accurate dimensions and TIG welds that were done by someone who knows how to weld. Seriously, I was a certified MIL spec heliarc weldor at one time and I know what good welding looks like.

If anybody is looking for a chassis, you can't go wrong with RJ.

Ha! Some guys think old parts make better sounding amps... how about old parts with provenance, eh? I'm very happy with the chassis I got from rj a couple of weeks ago. I'm also not at all surprised that are some guys around Los Alamos that can do some pretty fancy welding.

David,
When the switch on the front panel below the input jack is in the up position, it is a 2204 with a few minor tweaks. When the switch is down, it is in the "plexi" mode. If anyone is interested in the particulars of my tweaks and the mode switch, I can go into more detail.

Does everything ground to that small buss wire at the rectifier end of the board.

Also I forget, what do you call that red thread sealer used on Marshall's?

Structo, Yes, everything grounds to the chassis at that one point. What do you call that red stuff? Paint! :)
