Express kit?

Post by jcr1234 »

1. Is Ceriatone the only place to buy an Express kit?

2. Are there any opinions as to the quality of the kits?

3. How loud are the kits?

With the 2 EL34's are they as loud as 50 watt Marshall's? With the 2 6v6's are they about as loud as a deluxe reverb?

I tried one and though it sounded nice (especially for the $) it was louder even with 6V6s than my original Express is with EL34s! Maybe it had the 5.2k primary OT, as opposed to my original that has a 6.6k OT I don't know. Maybe it was just that it was a bit brighter than made it sound louder? We never actually put a DB meter on it. That said, even my original Express with 6V6s is louder than a Deluxe reverb when compared on the same speakers. I think an original Express or a decent clone with Pacific transformers won't be quite as loud as a Marshall 50 more closer to JTM45 territory maybe still even a little less loud. The gain of it though may be much more WILD and therefore make you THINK it's louder! Also, It's darn near impossible to play a cranked up Wreck at close range without potted pickups in your guitar.

Did you build your clones from a kit? If so, which one?

I think you may be able to get a kit from either rjguitars or allynmey PM them and find out.

I emailed both RJ and Allyn a few months ago about kits, and neither was offering kits at the time. I don't know if that has changed or not. However, with the excellent BOM's in the files section of the TW forum, I found it really easy to source the parts (with the exception of a few capacitors that took a little effort to track down). The documents that have been put together by the folks here at the TW forum are almost as good as a documented build guide. If you were asking about a Dumble, on the other hand, I'd say good luck.............

I used allynmey chassis for all three TrainWrecks.

Toneslut Heyboer trannies for the Liverpool.

Pacific tranny set from Allynmey for my Express.

Edcor PT from rjguitar for Rocket and dynaclone A-470-S OT from Troide Store and Hammond 158L expressparts.com.

Sourcing all the other parts as I went.

Joebob for TW boards either unloaded or loaded. Also, rjguitar for boards.
