possible to use valve recto with no CT on secondary HT?

Post by JamesHealey »

Im thinking of putting a valve rectifier into my amp to drop the B+ just as an experiment but my PT has no CT on the secondary side where the HT comes out I use a bridge rectifier grounded at the back to create a virtual CT.

any ideas? i've tried using a string of Zener diodes to ground to reduce the HT but i've been told this isn't too clever.

Yes you can. Use the half of the bridge rectifier (two diodes) that are connected to ground as usual, and the tube substitutes the other two diodes to give you the B+ side.

The complete waveform has to pass through the tube rectifier so you'll still have the same effect.

If it's not clear then I'll find the drawing I did for someone else the other day that was looking at doing the same thing.
