Trainwreck Rocket for clean??

Post by cradleofflames »

I understand the Rocket is AC30 based...

I'm looking for a "clean" amp to use opposite an Express. I intend to set it so that if I play light it's clean but if I dig in it's slightly dirty.

My major concern is will the amp be loud enough and clean enough to match an Express?

How does the amp accept pedals?

In reality I know very little about the amp so is there a better amp for what I'm doing??

Tone wise and gain wise you would probably really like it, and yes the Rocket works much better with pedals. However in the power department you might have to work with your speakers to balance it out, and/or attenuate the Express slightly. If you put the Rocket on very efficient speakers, and the Express on say G12Ms you might make it all work nicely. Truly though to get good cleans over an Express you would need MORE power, not LESS which is what you would have with the lower power Rocket. However like I said speaker efficiency or even different multiples of speakers per amp setup might make up for the differences. I hope that helps!

Ah heck, build a stereo Rocket with a PAIR of quad EL84 outputs and run that on a split wired 4x12 with Alnico blues. Then run an Express on a 4x12 with G12Ms. That's the ticket!

I was thinking of either running them into the same cab via a head-switcher like the Radial or running an open back cab for my clean.

Do you think modifying the power section for 2xEL34s Class A would maintain the sound/response but increase headroom?

(Isn't that how a Matchless Chieftan differs from the C-30s?)

Or would I really need Class A/B to achieve that?

BTW anyone have experience with Eminence Private Jacks with these amps?

For anybody that might not know it's their Greenback clone. I've run them for a couple of years now but I've only been able to compare them to late 70s G12Ms and recent production. I'd like to know how they come to pre-rolas or heritage. The Wizard (G12H copy) was spot on to early Rolas.
