Want to build a 3 watt amp

Post by nee »

Greetings!

I have the opportunity of getting some 3W output transformers and am wondering what might be a good project for a bedroom amp?

To put it simply: can I use - for example - a classic Fender preamp and stick the 3W transformer plus tube on the end of it, or is there more to it than that?! :?

Is it possible to use something like a 6V6GT with this trani, or should I be looking at a lower-power tube? What happens if you use a high-power tube with a low-power trani?

Many thanks!

a 6V6 will push a healthy 5W. you could look at the ECL82 which would give your roughly 3W at 250V plate voltage. it also saves you a triode stage, since it contains a triode and pentode in one envelope. add one 12AX7 to that and you could hit wreck territory at low volumes :D

also check out my 4W wreck thread here: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=9423

You don't say if the transformers are single ended or push pull or what the primary and secondary loads are rated for. All this makes a difference in making a suggestion. What else do you know about what you have?

5902 submini's put out about 1W each (~2W in push pull) and I quite like them, though they are low plate voltage tubes (160V max).

The transformer is single-ended, 4 Ohms-5K, 8 Ohms-8K, 16 Ohms-10K.
