gibson ga-40
Hi all. Very nice forum you've got here.
learned quite a bit already. My dad has an old Les Paul ga-40 that needs some help and I'd like to do what I can for him. Judging by other threads, its going to need some new caps (has a loud hum) and I know there are a couple of tubes that are not heating up. I have a bit of soldering experience, and think I can do it, but don't want to get in to something over my head. Should I look for a pro? Any suggestions on brands of caps, etc would be welcome as I am very new to the world of tube amps (but I think I'm hooked, help!) Thanks
Re: gibson ga-40
Great amp.. which year is it? The ones with the boards can be tricky.
Filter caps wouldn't be a problem. But if the trem isn't working etc.. those caps are mounted under the board, as are most all the caps. Not easy to get at too remove them.
If your not use to working on tube amps, i'd say for this amp,let someone else work on it. Look at Buffalo amps, they do the gibson stuff.. they may do repairs on gibson amps.

All point to point wiring at its finest
Talked to a guy here in Oregon named Pat Hickman who said he could do it. Going to be a couple hundred bucks though. Kinda steep $ for now, but maybe at some point. Tremolo worked fine till it started this deep hum, might still. I can't play well enough to do it any justice, but maybe eventually...

Re: the tubes
If your 6V6 weren't working, you'd have no [instrument] sound at all. The filaments are on. Look in a dark room.cafilener wrote:the tubes that appear to be out (they don't light up) are labeled 6v6. How much am I looking at for replacements?
