Dumbleified Vibrolux?

Post by grumpy »

I've been lurking around this site for little while but this is my first post. I've built a few marshall based amps before.
I have a '72 Vibrolux reverb which to cut a long story short needs a major rebuild (vintage amp greenys need not fret), instead of putting it back to original I have decided to use it as a base for a Dumble type amp. The trannys/choke are all fine, chassis is fine but everything else has pretty much had the jack!
I would just like to ask those more experienced with D type builds if this old fella will suit the task? 35-40w is fine for what I normally do, I'm not intending to use a Valve rectifier although there is provision for it of course.
I'd really appreciate any opinions before I proceed.

Cheers all, have really enjoyed this site so far. Thanks! Grumpy

Grumpy,

Check out Normsters bassman rebuild. Old Fender amps are perfect for Dumble clones. I'd bet that Norm's layout will fit in the Vibrolux perfectly.

+1, that sounds like a great platform. Do some research and you should find several threads that deal with tweaks to the layout after it is up and running. Good luck with your build.

I made a normster myself in a bass man, and one thing i noticed bout this amp is that on most amps i spend time looking for a sweet spot in all the settings. where are this is bout 80% sweetspot.. hard to find bad tone outa it:) (now if only i could say that bout my playing) :)

Thanks for the replies! Well I guess it's full steam ahead then, or at least whatever steam I can manage between gigs and family!!!!
I have a couple of bags of goodies that I received last week from Mouser and Antique Electronics...Vishays, 6PS OD's, Xicon MPP's, Atom filter caps etc so I'm pretty much ready to rock.
Thanks again, I'll let you all know how I get along!

Cheers from Oz (go you socceroos!!! Italy, you're on your way home,LOL!)
