no secret the ribbon is the best for horns and guitar anyone who bitches they stuggle to get a good guitar tone that sounds natural hasn't used a ribbon mic. i just hope they read the manual and don't apply 48v phantom to the mic. or they just bought an expensive hammer.

Beyer M160 ribbon is my first choice for overdriven guitar. Clean guitar gets a SM57 or MD421

Tough to beat a ribbon mic on guitar. I get good results with a CAD Trion ribbon. Not fussy in the gain department and cheap enough to do gigs. Does NOT like to see phantom power, though. That can be a hassle.... I've heard that those FatHead mics don't mind phantom power?

IMHO i've learned that when it comes to microphones you get what you pay for, with the exceptions being the standard work horse sm57 and sm58 or Sennheiser MD421 the next jump gets $$$ neumann U47(fet) U67, U87(ai), SM69, telefunken (eLam) . sony (c8000), coles 4038, royer 121, beyer M160 / m88, akg(c24), RBT, Fostex (ribbon), Octavia (russian ribbon) and to some extent the Blue Woodpecker ( but more for horns or drum OH ) There are a lot of companies claiming they make a microphone as good or with a similar part as a classic go to mic for penny's one the dollar, the problem is the money you save is money they didn't spend adding the rest of the parts that make that really nice microphone sound so sweet. Not to say for a couple $$ you couldn't mod a cheap mic to sound decent and get rid of the 500hz honk lower the hi pass filter and get some meat back and smooth out the 3-6Khz they call (bright brittle) clarity.

The time is ripe right now for microphone cloning.
