Rocket Tube replacements

Post by mclmk8d »

I have a Paul Ruby Rocket clone and was looking to change out the tubes. Paul recommended NOS Sylvania EL84s and Mullard 12AX7s.
I was reading here about the NOS Saratovs and everyone had really good things to say about them. How are they compared to the Sylvanias? I could not find the email or url of the Sgt. How can I get in touch with him?

I have no experience with the tubes you mention but I can recommend the Saratovs. Very difficult to beat for the money.

I've been too lazy to order the Saratovs, but I did get a chance to hear them once in my Rocket. (Tube rolling at Moss's shop.) Hands down the best sounding tubes I've ever tried in a Rocket. To be honest, I didn't like the Sylvanias at all. I thought the mids were a little thin. (Of course I only heard one set and I don't know what condition they were in.) The much maligned JJ was also pretty decent. They were a little dirtier, but I kinda liked their tone.
