Need help! to find the sweet spot in my poor mans DMBL amp

Post by tubedog »

Need some help. I bought a :oops: :cry: Ceriatone 100W overtone from Ebay and there are a few things I realy don’t like and I dont have the money for :P :P :P ......... amp.
1: there is no proper balance between clean and OD
2: OD seems to compressed and I can’t find the sweet spot violin sound I hear on youtube (100K trim)
I wonder what is wrong this is a very clean build and it is matching the Ceriatone layout exactly.
OT = Fender twin
PT = Ceriatone

What I want is a good warm and soulfull Fender clean and a warmer type OD.
Overall I think there are far to mutch mids.
I use a open back 2X12” G1265 cabinet
Should I go for the https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=5719 best layout or HRM or do I need other speakers like EV 12L.
Sorry I'am new here and this should be in de discussion files. Just don't know how to do this.

I think if you search the Dumble amp section you will find several threads about modding the Ceriatone amp.

Search Dogears posts. :wink:

First thing to check is the OD trim pot on the inside. It's most likely set way too high.

yep, first check the internal trims.

Then try a variety of tubes.

The track the build against the ODS-101 schematic.

Is the g1265 broken in? they have to be to sound right.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

Try setting the trimmer to 25K from wiper to ground.

Try the trimmer at around 25k, use a 470k input to trimmer instead of 220k, 1265s are mid mud speakers to my ears, try an EVM 12L. Use 10 uf cat byp on V1a , and 22uf cat byp on V1b. Try a .02 uf out of V2b instead of .005 . Try a
390pf snubber on V2a

As far as the balance between the clean and OD.

You should be able to get that close by setting your clean volume where you want it between the first volume pot and the Master.

If you turn up the volume but keep the master down you will break up sooner.
If you keep the volume low and the master up, you will have more clean head room.

So after you get your clean volume right, then adjust the OD level to the volume you wish to have for OD.
Should balance out.
Just remember that an OD tone usually sounds louder than it really is in SPL or decibels due to the distortion but it isn't necessarily louder so sometimes you have to turn the level up a bit to balance the two.

As mentioned the OD trimmer inside the amp will fine tune the OD.
On my amp the 25K point is about 9:30-10:00 on the trimmer but there can be variables that make that not the same on all ODS type amps.

If you want that super creamy OD like Santana, just tweak that trimmer up a bit.
You will have to experiment and use your own ears and guitar to determine the proper settings.
