Dumbleator advice (rough as guts beginning)

Post by Mark »

Firstly, the photo's do look like a mess.

This isn't the quality of work I do, but I do like to build up a rough as guts version to get a feel for the circuit that I'm about to work with. I want to get an idea of where I will have problems.

If I go in and drill a whole lot of holes and it doesn't work out, the job immediate becomes more expensive as I have to buy a new rack case or be prepared to live with random holes. Not cool!

So far, my first observation is that this circuit is sensitive to noise and hum. I did plug my guitar into the input and plugged the output into my Boogie SOB/Mark 1. I didn't hear a peep out of the Dumbleator other than noise.

I then plugged into the return side and I could hear my guitar with extra gain. The tone was noticeably different, it would normally sound quite Fender like, but the loop imparted Dumble qualities such as increased mids and reduced highs. I liked the tone immediately, I'm not sure how this would sound when using a Dumble, it might seem like having two Dumble amps in series?

Getting back to the input follower stage, I haven't worked out why I'm not hearing any sound?
I would have thought that I would have heard my guitar slightly quieter than the original signal. Does this sound correct?

I would also a appreciate any tips.

Thanks.

I have sorted out the problem of nothing coming out of the send circuit, I wired the input jack around the wrong way thus grounding the input signal.

Now build it already!!

Try adding at least a 47pf bright cap to the amps master. Then use cables to get rid of the highs when hooking up the Dlator.

That is the tone.

Yeah, fair call. I like to be very familiar with a circuit.

THe co-ax cable is very necessary, the pot on the input to the return circuit is sensitive to noise as you'd imagine. The effects loop does impart it's own sound, but it is a nice sound.

Thanks for the tip on the tone. Much appreciated. I had already put the 47pF in, I like the way it reacts with the master volume.
