I want to cut my '68 Fender 2x15 cab in two....
Am I crazy? I want to make a 1x15 extension cab to use with my '68 Super Reverb. I've thought about selling it to fund a new cab, but the thing is a shipping nightmare. It looks like modifying it wouldn't be too hard once the baffle is off. I'd just have to figure a way to cut the grill and retain the "drip edge "trim.
I have one of the JBL D130F speakers that I'm going to use once I get it reconed.
Anyone else done this?

Check Bax, now part of DB Schenker (yes, DB for Deutsche Bahn AG , German railroads).the thing is a shipping nightmare.
The basic Economy rate for a 100 lb 45" * 22" * 20" package shipped door to door, coast to coast, in 1 week or less is app. $62.

Don't do it. As is, it will fetch a decent price on Craig's list for local sale. You can probably fund the purchase of a 1x15 with what you get.
Consider:
You won't make a profit.
At least you won't hack a classic cab that someone else will use as is.
You will avoid a project that isn't likely to turn out all that well. I say this because, if you are asking, you probably don't have the cabinet making skills needed to to it "right". Hack jobs tend to grow arms and legs.
You will save the cost of buying whatever it is you need to make the hack job work, even if it isn't 100% cosmetically.
Can you live with bad cosmetics?
You will save time and money by selling this and buying what you really want/need.
Your purchase will be exactly what you expect it to be, and more. You are assuming that cutting the Fender in half will give you a properly tuned enclosure. This may prove to be a faulty assumption. Cab tuning has a very direct bearing on tone. This single point is a key consideration weighing against cutting the cab.
Don't hack the cab. You'll be glad you didn't.

Do not do it I once did that to a 210 cabinet and it doesn't work out as nice as you would think.
Get some 3/4 plywood build a box add the 1/2 plywood baffle and you have a 1-15 bottom. If you do not do wood working even a local worker could build one cheap and you could apply the bedliner material for a tough finish or buy a cheaper brand bottom and replace the speaker.

Good Lord!!!!
It would be a lot of work to cut and refinish your 2 x 15, not to mention you would ruin its resale value. It would be cheaper/faster/better to buy a new one. They come in all sorts of colors and closed/open back configurations.
Good Luck

Sell the cab, buy or build a smaller one for the JBL.
Karma will thank you.

Thanks for the comments guys. Although my woodworking skills aren't too bad, I don't think I want to tackle it. Plus I don't think I'd ever get over hacking a fairly nice cab. I think I'll try craigslist and the for sale section here and then feebay with local pickup and see what happens.
As far as cabs go, I have a Lopo 1x12 that's not to hateful, and I've been looking at Avatar. Any others out there?

I'm a big fan of Swanson and Mather cabs, and there's a guy on the forum here (Eric...goes by muchxs) who builds stuff as well.

the 1x12 lopo extra deep/wide cabs are pretty nice sounding. The mini's are a bit sterile. Probably cant be beat for price.
Though made out of particle board, so a bit heavy, and they dont have that nice fancy curved cutout back, which due to its similarity to, I always refer to as the 'karlson curve'. That curve does enhance the deep end a tad.

Yeah, I have the small 1x12. I agree with you, not much to write home about. But the price is right.the 1x12 lopo extra deep/wide cabs are pretty nice sounding. The mini's are a bit sterile. Probably cant be beat for price.
Thanks

Using it for guitar or bass?

Guitar. I want to mainly use it with my Super Reverb and load it with a JBL D130F.jaysg wrote:Using it for guitar or bass?

Re: I want to cut my '68 Fender 2x15 cab in two....
I thought they used 3/4" plywood. I asked them if they would make cabs for me out of 1/2" ply, they said they would.briane wrote:the 1x12 lopo extra deep/wide cabs are pretty nice sounding. The mini's are a bit sterile. Probably cant be beat for price.

likely they changed it up then. I bought my cabs a couple a years back, right when they were just starting out. That makes a big difference in weight.I thought they used 3/4" plywood.
