Skyliner nonHRM vs Bluesmaster HRM (clips inside)...

Post by mcinku »

Both amps are Ceriatones 2x6L6. Many people asked what is the difference so I decided on doing some clips.
... but let me say something, I'm not happy with the outcome. This recordings do not reflect what I hear from these amps. I tried my best but it was a while since I was recording anything and I had only 2 hours and I didn't wanted to eq anything... but at least the conditions were the same for both so here goes nothing.

I used my ES339 for this session... I recorded first 12 bars clean, than OD and last OD+PAB. Clean was neck pup the rest is bridge with tone slightly dimmed.
As you can see on the pic, I used Fender style (open back) 1xG12-65 cab with SM57 in the face and AT4040 as a room mic.

I recorded everything in one go, I didn't change tonestack from clean to OD. You can see how I used the pots in this second picture.
BTW all switches were on OFF.

...and I had Klein, RV5 and TC Vintage Delay in the loop.

OTS -btw my PAB on the OTS is moded as BM one

BM-HRM (all HRM pots are at 12:00 - didn't played with those yet :?)

This is the best I could do in a hurry...

Nice.

I'd say I liked the OD better on the OTS and the clean better on the HRM as far as tone goes.

Unfortunately I cleared up all my gear,... this week I'm too busy for anything really and next week my vacation starts... so this will not happen anytime soon but I can tell you something. When I use both at the same time, I'm in tone heaven.

I much prefered the HRM all the way around. I'd like it even more after you adjust the stack!

Quality sounds!

I like the clean part of both clips, with a slight preference for the the Non-HRM, which seem a little more Fendery to me.

OD wise, I like the Non-HRM best,

However, both the OD parts of the clips, seem to be a little mushy on the lower tones/strings. So I guess I would clean the OD a bit with a capacitor on OD input.

Please take into account, that I'm a Strat/Tele guy 8)

My room is very dark sounding... I usually use the deep switch at home. It will make the lo end tighter... but for this session, I didn't want to use any tricks.

I was looking at the layout for the BM HRM and it doesn't seem like the PAB relay is wired right.

It just lifts the 68K resistor.
I think this is the right way with Bluesmaster type of amps, isn't it.

Well the relay has the ground connected to the NC terminal so the CCW lug of the mid pot is grounded when PAB is off.

When the relay is on, the 68K resistor is connected from CCW to ground.

What does the 22M do on the relay, doesn't appear to be connected to anything?

The boost will work fine as is, due to the 68k 'tail' resistor, however the 22m resistor should be connected to the other side of the relay if one wanted to be correct as per the original, or to experiment with the mega-boost. Perhaps it's just an error in the layout drawing?

I think the 22M is there just 'cause Nik is using same board for nonHRM and BM-HRM.

...so I got one more 22M resistor for free.

I like the clean on both, but the OD on both sounds a tad "wooly" to me. I'm not hearing any shimmer on the attack like I like to hear. I'm not sure why. The mike positioning looks correct, the settings look correct and the speaker should give you plenty of snap. :?

Maybe I should also mention that nonHRM is loaded with TungSols reissue and BM-HRM is JJ all over.
For the final tone tubes definitely play a role... but I must admit, I'm quite happy with the amps and I don't think I'm going to invest in some NOS tubes.
