need help tweaking the climax ....
Hello all , New member here . I spent some time reading through some threads and have a simple question perhaps . I have an early Climax that I really like alot . It has a great clean tone like a nice super or a Deluxe when I run 6V6's . I run an a/b/c box and have had luck running the chanels seperate or together which sounds good too . Mine is not harsh or finicky like I have read , she seems real solid and I like it alot , considering I have played alot of amps in my days . My question is about the midrange on the lead channel . The channel is a bit too mid heavy when playing alone . With a band it really comes through the mix and its great to be able to hear yourself . So that being the existing scenario . Where is the place to back down the mids on this puppy ? I've mostly tweaked Marshall type circuits , so I know that pretty well . I'm just new to the lead circuit . I guess I would need help finding the cap or caps to work with and which direction to go . I want a little more range on the mid pot maybe , but ultimately want less pronounced mids . When I max out the mid control on the lead channel I want it to be where it would cut through live , and back it down to say half for recording and playing guitar alone . Thanks in advance for any assistance and this is a really great board !

Is this a Kendrick Climax or home built?
Not familiar with that amp does it have a mid pot?
If not, then it is probably has a mid range fixed resistor that you can adjust.
Or play with the mid cap values.
There are a few tone stack calculators on the web that allow you to plug in different values and plot a wave to see what those changes do.

Don't let that smoke out!

lead channel schematic
here is the schematic of the lead channel. The only difference between the climax tone stack and a typical Marshall is the mid pot is 10KA instead of 25KA. The difference between the climax lead and a Fender AB763 is the 500pf (ala marshall) cap in place of the Fender's 250pf. It's kind of like a cross between the Marshall and the Fender tone stacks. I would try putting in a 25k pot first and then try the 250pf cap. A Fender bright switch might be a good flavor as well.

what if you changed out the .68uf cap for a 25uf on the first stage cathode?
anything worth doing, is worth doing right

Hey guys , thanks for all your input . Mr . Worley , I may have to change my screen name , its not Mr. Witt .
I have an origional Kendrick Climax inside of # 10 and I like her . She is really well made inside and the only thing I had to do was put some foam in between the steel cap cover to dampen vibration that really made things chaotic . She is quiet now .
The.68 to a 25 uf may make sense , it would open up the mids and bass and perhaps be what I am looking for. I just don't want to break solder joints without a direction that may be known . I am just very happy with this amp . Unfortunately some aren't so happy in my reading . Maybe I have a good one , who knows .
The circuit is one in which I have not tried to tweak before . I was very impressed live with the amp , when only playing it in my house or studio . I know its kind of close to the express circuit , but not really sure how close , or what changes were made during production .
I understand backing down on the pot would attain reduced mids . It does have a midreange control . I'm not real sure , so I was wondering if I go after the cap , the pot or another area to address this minor issue .
It really sounds fabulous to me . I have the cansary wood two ten cab and like to run my vintage marshall with 003 cone pre rolas to get some big tone . I have Weber p10R's and Blue Pups and Silver Bells that sounded great , but I blew them up ;( . I'm getting them reconed and am gonna run a P10R and a Silverbell . They sound wonderfull . I can do that with 6V6 tubes only . The wattage seems WAY too much with 6L6 or EL34s .
Great amp and great board here . Thanks for all your help here , I have learned alot , even in the Dumble section ! Glad I found you all and I look forward to posting some clips to show you all . Thanks alot in advance , I think we are heading in the right direction . Tone to the bone !

You might try standard Fender value caps in the tone stack -- 250p, .1uF and .047uF. If you only change the 500p to 250p, it will shift the center frequency of the midrange dip to about 800Hz (high E string, 15th fret ... not exactly midrange). If you change the mid pot to 25k, it will boost midrange. If you change the .68k bypass cap to 25uF, it will boost midrange and bass -- probably too much for a lead channel. If changing the tone stack winds up sounding too "Fendery" to you, you can also try reducing the slope resistor. 68k will restore a bit of the midrange lost by going to .1 and .047.
