Hi, my build is completed on the Mission deluxe kit 5E3. I just tried the bulb limiter test with no tubes in. The pilot light comes on and no smoke when I hit the mains switch and the bulb limiter glows very dull with a 25 watt bulb. I then hit the standby and the bulb continues to glow dull. I then tried to read the cap voltages but there was no reading. I am waiting to proceed. Do I need the tubes in to get a HV reading??
Do I need to have the rectifier tube installed to charge the caps?? On this test cycle.

Re: 5E3 bulb limiter test questions
Yes you need the rectifier tube in to get HV To the cap stack.
Try it with just that tube in to check your voltages.
The bulb should go bright to dim and it will stay dim with no shorts, if it stays bright you would have a short as it will be carrying the load.
If it goes to dim you can take it out and recheck your voltages as they will change with out the bulb.
If all looks good tube it up and see what you have.

In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird , and they take Prozac to make it normal.

Yes, you need the rectifier in to charge the filter caps. Stick the rectifier in and power it up. When you go off standby you should see the bulb limiter go bright momentarily and then go dim and stay dim. If that test is successful, power up the amp without the bulb limiter and check your filter cap voltages if desired.
Have you seen Paul Ruby's start up guide? It's excellent. He doesn't use a bulb limiter, but you can add it as needed. You can find it here:

Some gut shots
It's a Mission kit, worked out really well and sounds great.

Re: 5E3 bulb limiter test questions
Lets see, you built the D'Lite, then what did you build? An Express?
Now the Deluxe.
Dude, you are on a roll.
I want to build a JTM45 or 50 watt Plexi but no job kind of puts a damper on those plans.......
I wish this economy would pick up!
I got amps to build!
