Well I have been so busy building amps that I hadn't got around to finishing my cabs. But here is a bad photo of two. One is the drawer kit cherry with maple front and the other I made out of aspen with maple front.

I need new equipment as I had a lot of trouble getting good 45 degree miter cuts.

Curbdog

When you ordered your drawer you must have ordered the with and length differently to get the dovetails on the side which looks better. I ordered using Tim's instructions.

Very cool faceplate and front panel.

I never thought about exchanging length and width to rearrange the joints
This idea originally came from Jem, whom I haven't seen around lately.

Tim,

When I saw a picture of the drawer cab with the joints on the side rather than the way mine were done on top it made me wonder if I had followed the instruction wrong. I like the dovetails on the side much better or half blind dovetails.

Like someone said above, there is no right or wrong. There is only what you like 8)
It's sorta like DIY cat-skinnin'. There's a million ways to do it

My drawer cab

Post by jem »

When I came up with this idea I was in the mode where everything you look at you consider how it can be used in an amp. It certainly wasn't meant to offend the real cabinet makers.
Here are a few pictures of my drawer. I realized after I put it together that it would have been better to have the joints the other direction. So when you pick it up from the top, the joints wouldn't want to come apart.
Tim, I actually am in a band again for the first time in about 25 years, so haven't had a lot of time on here.
I came by to try to find out best method for my express, master volume, or VVR? Too loud for boys the way it is now. That'll be next, just figured it was time to show my shoddy cabinet work.

Soooo, how do you order a drawer so the joints are on the sides?

Just switch the depth and width dimensions.

I want to get one of these for a Rockster build I am planning. I have read and re- read the instructions on how to measure for this . Right now it is clear as mud to me. I would like someone who has done this to suggest the correct size "drawer" that I should buy.
My chassis is 20" X 6" X 2.5"
What would be the correct size to buy? Thanks

We need the thickness of the chassis plus the height of the tallest component on the top of the chassis. That will give us the inside dimensional height of the cab. Let's say the components on the chassis top need 6" of clearance to accommodate their height and add some room for air flow. That would be 8.5" total inside height. You might need 1/8" in the width to allow moving the chassis in and out more easily. You also may need some extra in the front and back to allow protection of knobs, switches, etc. Let's say, 2", one in the front of the chassis and one in the back.
Now add the foot print of your chassis to these allowances and you get:
20.125 x 8 x 8.5 inside dimensions of the cab.
The Woodcraft drawers are made from 5/8" stock. Two sides= 1.25", added to 20.125 gives you the width of the cab: 21.375".
Top and bottom= 1.25", added to 8.5" gives you the height of the cab: 9.75"
So the cab's outside dimensions are: 21.375"x9.75"x8".
The drawers are ordered by the outside dimensions.
The cab is just a drawer laid on its side. Just think of your empty cab lying on its back. You either have a narrow, deep drawer or a wide drawer that's not too deep!
If you want to have the dovetails on the top of the cab, the width of the cab is the depth of the drawer. If you want the dovetails to be on the ends of the cab, the width of the cab is the width of the front of the drawer.
21.375 will be the width of your cab based on the dimensions you gave. The height and depth depend on how much clearance you need above your transformers, tube, etc., and how much space you need in front of and behind the chassis.
I hope this helps :D
