Kenny was always so excited to listen to what was happening with the artist . He was a major fan of music and it was the soundtrack of his life . He played some guitar , but the view from his perspective was so interesting to him . He was at the epicenter of the creative process . Most of the musicians bringing gear to have serviced were being stifled by the roadblock that the gear was presenting to them . He would have a quiet smile inside , knowing he was going to far exceed any expectaion the musician would have . He was providing solutions and freedom . I know this personally , as I would bring in my Marshalls having failed . My lifeline was broken and in my mind never going to be the same . I couldn't practice or play with my bands and I feared I may never get the same tone again . Ken listened to what I was so upset about , asked me some questions , made alot of suggestions and gave me hope right away . He would unpack the Marshall , pull out the chasis and put it on the bench while we were talking . Sometimes he was in the middle of something and his friends were always so cool and complient when he did this . Inside of five minutes , he poked around with the amp under power and had an idea of what was happening . Still talking and joking around with everyone that day , he would power it down and start to unsolder and replace parts . I noticed he would measure a component before installing it . Sometimes it took some time for him to do this . I was confused because it seemes like he was auditioning a part to see if he found a 'good one' .
At the time in New Jersey the guitar pool of players was sick . Los Angeles was the epicenter with big hair and the spotlight . But on our coast the quality of the guitar player was through the roof . Guys like Dave Dipietro from TT Quick and Ken Dubman from Prophet or Edgar Cayce was through the roof . Kenny put together a rig for Ken Dubman that was a clone of the early Van Halen sound .
I point to this because Ken and Jose Arrendondo had their paths crossed at Ampeg . Ken is one of the few that had the inside information of what Eddie Van Halen was doing in the early days when his tone was remarkable . He set up Ken Dubman with a 73 50 watt Marshall slaved into a 77 100 watter running 6550 tubes . It was unreal to see Dubman play as he was and is a monster with a Trainwreck enginneered tone . THis was before Kenny was building his Trainwrecks . Of the entire world submitting material for the Marshall ultimate player contest . Ken Dubman won it hands down .
It resonates to me to this day because I loved the VH I tone and nobody had it except Dubman . It wouldn't have happened without Trainwreck . Dubman is a player in my movie . He will blow you away . He has blown me into the woods for over twenty years ! Nobody plays like him .
Trainwreck would repair PA systems and his philanthropy extended to helping school kids and his community . He did blind comparisons with his work behind a curtain . He had the kids tell him what sounded better and used outside hearing to determine at times what was working and what was not . Its important to note he designed with a Les Paul , a Strat and a P-90 Les Paul Junior . The Tele was the absolute baseline . For those of us who really didn't like them because of the way they looked or the stigma that a tele didn't rock . Well , we all owned a Tele because of Ken . Its probalby the best guitar on the planet . Hate to say it , but I know its true . LOVE the 59 Flametops , but I heard it . Glens work has us tuned in to the tone . But to accept a Tele after that takes some convincing . Done deal .
My project tells the story of a great man , and as it unfolds ( alot of folks I have not even contacted yet ) I am totally amazed and challenged by the depth of the story . It seemed to be a very clear vision to tell of a great man . But the amount of people impacted is simply amazing . And to be honest , I have not even spoke with Allyn and Gene yet , or Holger for that matter . Simply eye opening and very exciting . At this point I have decided to include alot of amps , the story behind it and the recording of the playing with major artists as a special feature of the film , accessed by the menu . Not even in the actual story . Its simply unreal . So exciting and to think how encompasing Ken has impacted people is staggering . I studied Philosophy for my entire life and to find myslef in this position with such a beautiful group of people including everyone reading this on this fantastic site is more that I could have ever imagined . Its not often life exceeds your dreams . Thank you all so much . ROCK on , this is gonna be one hell of a epicenter when it drops . Its gonna circle the earth . Our day has not come to pass YET . Warmest Regards , David Scott
As a side note , feel free to contact me regarding this project . I hope to hear from everyone . It may not be on the main film , but there is a large special feature on the DVD and an entire website commited to this project . The Amp Garage in my eyes is the greatest resource . In no way do I want to detach from it . I plan to honor those who participate and learn here in the highest regards with pure integrity and warmest intent .
Had to revisit with an edit real quick , I'm getting old . and actually this has been a project 15 years in the making
