Trainwreck lineage and ongoing research

Post by Plexified »

Recently , I have shared with the board that I have been in the development stages of a documentary that has been ongoing for over ten years . The informatin I have collected includes my own personal interaction with Kenny since 1981 . I was slowly compiling information including Ken as the main participant until his untimely passing impacted us all . I have been mourning his loss ever since and recently realized that may never end . As a friend and forever impacted by Kenny I could not see the day that his impact and favor would ever ease up enabling me to continue with this project . Recently , I had realized that his story can still be shared . With the people he impacted and the music that was the end result of why he was so inspired to begin with its finally made sense to me and the sharing of this philosophy is something that will be told by a wonderfull group of people . I would like to share some of my experiences . Maybe it can give some insight to everyone . I'm not including myself in the film . I'm a sounding board and an archive of this journey and hope to offer the end result within a format that Ken could be proud of . To give a bit of insight , I want you to know that this project is going to involve film students that will span the country and his vision of sharing and propegating new talent is the spirit in which this project will become .

Kenny was always so excited to listen to what was happening with the artist . He was a major fan of music and it was the soundtrack of his life . He played some guitar , but the view from his perspective was so interesting to him . He was at the epicenter of the creative process . Most of the musicians bringing gear to have serviced were being stifled by the roadblock that the gear was presenting to them . He would have a quiet smile inside , knowing he was going to far exceed any expectaion the musician would have . He was providing solutions and freedom . I know this personally , as I would bring in my Marshalls having failed . My lifeline was broken and in my mind never going to be the same . I couldn't practice or play with my bands and I feared I may never get the same tone again . Ken listened to what I was so upset about , asked me some questions , made alot of suggestions and gave me hope right away . He would unpack the Marshall , pull out the chasis and put it on the bench while we were talking . Sometimes he was in the middle of something and his friends were always so cool and complient when he did this . Inside of five minutes , he poked around with the amp under power and had an idea of what was happening . Still talking and joking around with everyone that day , he would power it down and start to unsolder and replace parts . I noticed he would measure a component before installing it . Sometimes it took some time for him to do this . I was confused because it seemes like he was auditioning a part to see if he found a 'good one' .

At the time in New Jersey the guitar pool of players was sick . Los Angeles was the epicenter with big hair and the spotlight . But on our coast the quality of the guitar player was through the roof . Guys like Dave Dipietro from TT Quick and Ken Dubman from Prophet or Edgar Cayce was through the roof . Kenny put together a rig for Ken Dubman that was a clone of the early Van Halen sound .

I point to this because Ken and Jose Arrendondo had their paths crossed at Ampeg . Ken is one of the few that had the inside information of what Eddie Van Halen was doing in the early days when his tone was remarkable . He set up Ken Dubman with a 73 50 watt Marshall slaved into a 77 100 watter running 6550 tubes . It was unreal to see Dubman play as he was and is a monster with a Trainwreck enginneered tone . THis was before Kenny was building his Trainwrecks . Of the entire world submitting material for the Marshall ultimate player contest . Ken Dubman won it hands down .

It resonates to me to this day because I loved the VH I tone and nobody had it except Dubman . It wouldn't have happened without Trainwreck . Dubman is a player in my movie . He will blow you away . He has blown me into the woods for over twenty years ! Nobody plays like him .

Trainwreck would repair PA systems and his philanthropy extended to helping school kids and his community . He did blind comparisons with his work behind a curtain . He had the kids tell him what sounded better and used outside hearing to determine at times what was working and what was not . Its important to note he designed with a Les Paul , a Strat and a P-90 Les Paul Junior . The Tele was the absolute baseline . For those of us who really didn't like them because of the way they looked or the stigma that a tele didn't rock . Well , we all owned a Tele because of Ken . Its probalby the best guitar on the planet . Hate to say it , but I know its true . LOVE the 59 Flametops , but I heard it . Glens work has us tuned in to the tone . But to accept a Tele after that takes some convincing . Done deal .

My project tells the story of a great man , and as it unfolds ( alot of folks I have not even contacted yet ) I am totally amazed and challenged by the depth of the story . It seemed to be a very clear vision to tell of a great man . But the amount of people impacted is simply amazing . And to be honest , I have not even spoke with Allyn and Gene yet , or Holger for that matter . Simply eye opening and very exciting . At this point I have decided to include alot of amps , the story behind it and the recording of the playing with major artists as a special feature of the film , accessed by the menu . Not even in the actual story . Its simply unreal . So exciting and to think how encompasing Ken has impacted people is staggering . I studied Philosophy for my entire life and to find myslef in this position with such a beautiful group of people including everyone reading this on this fantastic site is more that I could have ever imagined . Its not often life exceeds your dreams . Thank you all so much . ROCK on , this is gonna be one hell of a epicenter when it drops . Its gonna circle the earth . Our day has not come to pass YET . Warmest Regards , David Scott

As a side note , feel free to contact me regarding this project . I hope to hear from everyone . It may not be on the main film , but there is a large special feature on the DVD and an entire website commited to this project . The Amp Garage in my eyes is the greatest resource . In no way do I want to detach from it . I plan to honor those who participate and learn here in the highest regards with pure integrity and warmest intent .

Had to revisit with an edit real quick , I'm getting old . and actually this has been a project 15 years in the making :o . Yeah time is slow but wow that is such a paradox. I better hurry up.....

Sounds like such a great project David.

I'm sure I'm not alone in the guitar world in that I really didn't know who Ken was or what his contribution to the guitar amp world was until I started working on my own tube amps several years ago.

I kind of had a re-birth if you will.
I have always tinkered around with electronics since I was a kid.

Adulthood comes along and responsibilities attached to it such as family, career and life, that I kind of lost sight of my favorite pass time which is guitar oriented music.

About ten years ago I got back into guitars and amps and built my first tube amp over two years ago now.

It was through this wonderful forum that, although I had heard of Ken and read about his Trainwreck amps, I became much more acquainted with his designs and his life's work.

Do you have a deadline in mind for your project and is there a website for it?

Looking forward to the day it is complete. :D

I can't wait to read your completed project! I, like Structo became familiar with Ken through his monthly articles in VG when I started tinkering with my own tube amps.

Best wishes on a speedy completion date,

NG.

I have to say the project has taken on a life of its own . I had mentioned about my lifelong interest in studying philosophy and it very much intersects with music and how people are moved and express themselves as a result . Losing someone I admired so much for the unselfish persuit of helping people and watching how Kens persona moved people has amazed me . This board is a direct example . I have not really participated here in a long time and my last few weeks has me amazed , reading about all of you and your love for music and how it has moved you all . It really is amazing . The first few stories absolutely blew me away . I had my own collective research and details about alot of stuff , but the internet has exploded and so many people have shared the experiences they have and the unselfish knowledge that is absolutely amazing . Like Ken Burns who is arguably the best when it comes to telling a quality story and the documentary format , I soon realized I was challenged to put all this impact together . Its been very eye opening . Sometimes its as if a single person can be the subject of an amazing story . That has been my biggest challenge . This year I plan to capture the footage , the recordings of players and the wonderful sound of his amps . In keeping true to Kens vision of helping people and sharing his craft unselfishly I decided to involve film students and film schools . The initial impact on the young from this project is also something I never expected . The editing and the construction of this project is an amazing challenge . Primarily because it is so close to my heart I wonder often if I can do it justice . So to answer your question regarding a deadline . I would say that to capture the footage by the end of the year is realistic . The Post Production begins at that point to put it together . That is when it really becomes challenging . I have augmented my outline on a daily basis . Primarily because everyone I communicate with is a stand out . I have major concerns about the length and the challenge to put together a final showing . This has lead to a feature of special segments that will be on the DVD as sub stories . For instance just take one amp , its story and history . Quite amazing . I may wind up with several films as a result . So I do have plans for an exclusive website to go to for information and an ongoing lineage , but the amount of work is mind numbing . This whole deal winds up in the rock and roll hall of fame . Currently a good example is Dr Z and Brad Paisley . Simply amazing . The scheduling with these artists is a bit of a challenge and often without me being their its a waiting game to get some of the footage back . But rest assured its amazing . Billy Gibbons , George Lynch and on and on .... The site will help the anticipation , there I can upload some progress to share and have everyone interact . So stay tuned and as always check in with me and I will include in the format as much as possible . I'm just a sounding board and the work speaks for itself . Kens work and his impact . David

This sounds like a great project David! It's so nice to find people that knew Ken. I wish I had known him. He sounds like a great guy.
