Swamp Thang + Tonker, what type of cab?
Just ordered the Swamp Thang and Tonker and am going to build a cab. What do you recommend?

I'm using mine in an old Peavey 2x12 combo VTX. Sounds great.ontariomaximus wrote:Just ordered the Swamp Thang and Tonker and am going to build a cab. What do you recommend?

oval back 2x12
28 x 21 x 12 1/4
Sounds AMAZING! It'll be a tad bright until you break them in, after that it will be super sweet and have fantastic definition with a punchy but full bass response.

I would like to hear a swamp thing in an 806 Thiele design..
Last year on Tour Billy Gibbons was using 2 Swamp Things in Demeter ISO cabs.... Got back stage to see his rig... there wasn't a tube in his rack... All Transistors

...and maybe some goodness coming out of the FOH desk?!? It's pretty standard these days in the touring biz for the FOH guy to take a DI of the guitars since most of the FOH consoles are now running Pro Tools. That leaves them open to use Amp Farm or any of the many other killer software amp sims to mix in with the live sound. It's actually pretty great...talbany wrote:I would like to hear a swamp thing in an 806 Thiele design..

I play in a little blues band and we carry our own gear (like most guys on this forum I guess), so no pro tools or even an FOH guy fo us, but thats ok

Thanks, that's near exactly to what I was thinking. What size oval? I have a hunch the oval is actually tuning the box in the LF, and providing some breathing room for the mids. Best of both worlds (thiele + open back). Do you have this cab? It would interesting to find out if it's tuned somewhere from 50 to 80 hz, and if so, could be a strong contributing factor why it's amazing.Funkalicousgroove wrote:oval back 2x12

One of my other cabs that I am using is an oversize 1x12 (20 x 27 x 12, 2.3ft3 net internal) tuned cab with the Emi Delta Pro 12A. Outfrickingstanding. Tuned to 66hz.
Re: Swamp Thang + Tonker, what type of cab?
Almost exactly the dimentions of the Peavey cab, but rectangle opening in the back. I agree completly with Brandon's assessment. This is my go-to amp for almost everything I do.Funkalicousgroove wrote:oval back 2x12

I bought both of these speakers used but not broken in. Amazing how folks buy speakers then don't give them a chance to break in before deciding they're shit.

I was watching that Texas concert again the other night and I know his tech is switching his effects.
Sometimes he may only use a certain effect one time on one bar and never use it again the rest of the gig. Like a delay.
All Billy does is ride his guitar volume and not that much of that, usually just to make sure it's on 11.
But I have read that their stage volume is very low, to where you can talk to each other on stage with no problem.
It's all FOH.
I had always heard he ran some kind of Marshall amp, into ISO cabs.
So are you saying that there is not a tube amp at all for his guitar?
But what amazes me, no matter what guitar he slings, his tone is always the same.
I know all about the "it's in the fingers" but that is pretty slick that he can make a LP, Tele, or his Billy Bo all sound almost identical.
He definitely has the goods and the three of them know every cue and break.
It was funny at one point I think he broke the low E and had his nerdy guitar tech bring out an LP for him.
Is it true he uses 8's on all his guitars?
Tom
Don't let that smoke out!

Re: Swamp Thang + Tonker, what type of cab?
I don't know if he uses 8's on all his guitars... I know he's got them on a few..Several of his LP are chambered and weigh very little as well..Is it true he uses 8's on all his guitars?
Also no he's not using software to generate his tone.. I don't think he would go that extreme...I heard Billy showed up at a Brooks and Dunn Show in LA...Billy did a few tunes using Ronnies guitar and Blues JR and sounded like you guessed it Billy Gibbons...As far as the stage volume goes yes there is very little.. Frank has triggers on all his drums so the stage stays pretty quiet..In Billy's world nobody can touch him!!!

the Oval is Roughly 40% by 60% of the cab size, but I also had an Avatar with a Swamp and a Tonk, and the oval was much wider, and it sounded great. FWIW, I think the standard rectangular cutout would suffice and also sound great.

I tried one in one of my D style ported cabs, and it was OK- To me this speaker sounds sweeter in an open back design, it has HUGE basstalbany wrote:I would like to hear a swamp thing in an 806 Thiele design..

Re: Swamp Thang + Tonker, what type of cab?
Has anyone compared a Swamp and a Tonk in an open back 1x12 100K 50W combo? If so which one came out on top?
Cheers, Paul.
