Easter bunny left me head cabs.

Post by gahult »

Not really. I ate him last night for supper.

I just finished these up this morning.

Don't mind it dusty fingerprints. I just brought them up from the garage. I'll clean em up good in a few days once the bed liner cures some more.

I am lacking feet on one as I didn't order enough. (Damn Mouser should have knew that.) I am thinking about putting handles on these as they are not the traditional wood Trainwreck cabs.

Looks good Gary.

Are you using a Kreg pocket screw setup?

I've got one of those, but use biscuits. Any advantage that you see by using pocket screws?

dartanion,

Thanks.

I used my usual biscuit for the sides and top/bottom. I didn't want to deal with trying to roll the bed liner on in the corners after assembly so I used the Kreg for the front panel screws.

I used bed liner in a spray can for the inside the cab and the back edges, and ends of the front panel. Then I rolled on the outsides of the cab and the front of the front panel. When it all cured I mounted the front panels. Seemed to work out pretty well that way.

The spray gives a smoother more leathery type texture than the roller does and getting into the corners is sooooo much easier.

I'm thinking I'll be using the Kreg for all my future builds. I like.

Just a side note. They don't stock the Kreg screws at Home Depot so I'll have to hunt up a source for them. Luckily enough came with the unit to complete these and a couple more.

Those look great Gary!

Can you tell me a little more about the bedliner spray?

Brand?

How long does it take before you can handle it?

I have never covered anything with tolex before so this looks like a great alternative for covering.

Thanks
Tom

Gary, very nice cabs. :)

But I counted four? What is the deal there? :?

I have been thinking about doing this bedliner coating for a future larger chassis built. When you spray the inside of the cab do you need to then adjust your front valance size due to built up? Or do you adjust for that when you built the front valance? Maybe the bed liner material isn't that thick one has to worry.

I use the kregg jig for front face on kitchen cabinets and wet bar builds very handy. I was lucky because you can get those screws in various sized all over this town.

Gary,

I was looking at the cabs again and it reminds me of that composit decking material if I could only get that stuff in 10 inch wide boards, expensive though.

The bed liner (spray and quart can roll on stuff) is Dupli-Color. I picked it up at the local Meijer store. Should be available at Wally World or an auto supply store.

It drys pretty quick, almost to quick. Drys to touch in 10/15 Min. Both the spray and the roll on can recoat in an hour or two.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Woodcraft store is about 2/3 hours away for the closest. :(

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

4 cabs :?:  You're seeing double. Not really there are 4. One each for the 2 grandsons and 2 for my "Express and "Rocket" when I get to them.
That is till I can get to the "Exotic" wood cabs later.

I was thinking I couldn't get the 2 cabs I needed out of the material I bought (2 boards) so I bought another. After some careful planning as to a cutting schedule I found I could get 4. :D So, I went ahead and did a mini-production run.

The wife came out in the garage and had the proverbial female question " How many amplifiers do you need?"

"I don't know I just using up the extra wood I bought"
Don't know if she bought that.

Thanks,

Gary

Good one Gary

My wife knows better as all I talk about is amp building and all she talks about is work so even trade off. I did advisemy lovel wife that for Christmas and my Birthday, I will supply a list of transformers I could use. :)

Good job on the cabs Gary. Oh you never did tell me if the coating is thick and requires some sanding to fit the front valance?

Mark,

The spray liner was not overly thick like the roller stuff.

I did make the front panels with a snug fit.

After spraying the inside of the cab and the ends of the panel I found I had to go back and sand the ends of the panels for clearance and spray them again.

The spray drys pretty fast so didn't lose a lot of time.

Thanks Gary the information, it is helpful so that I can plan ahead when I use this type of coating. I had been wondering if everyone had coated the inside or just taped off a portion and coated the rest of outside and edges of the cabs.
