Just wondering what people use for terminal strips - i.e. adjacent to V1. Could i fabricate those from a piece of glass board and some eyelets? Anyone ever try that?

Yes - eyelet board can mount on the tube socket screws (use long screws and extra nuts as the standoffs) and be a real space saver. Here's one that covers 3 tubes.
