STARTING A ROCKET - ROCKET POWER TRANSFORMER

Post by jujudubluz »

hey guys,

i've been lurking here for a long time and decided to take the plunge and build a rocket... i have almost all my parts on their way except the transformers...
anyway, i still have a few questions regarding the power transformer, i was about to order a set from toneslut, but re-read every single information regarding rocket builds.

allyn says he uses a 255-0-255 in his build report
rj sells a 245-0-245
the list part calls for a 250-0-250
finally , moose sells a 260-0-260.

i'm aware that there's a 5% tolerance but i'm getting lost and can't really decide which PT to order.

i was about to order a toneslut set since he stocks these in 240v. (ho yeah, i live in france...) but all those references make me wonder.

let me know if this is a silly question or help me to decide which PT i should get.

juju.

by the way, this forum is awesome and everytime i spend time over here, i learn something new, so i guess it's time to thank you all.

If Moose-Toneslut has your 240v mains for euro then you should go with that. I hate to take away from the other sellers but you need that 240v mains so it only makes sense.

I used rj's 245v tranny and it made for a very nice sounding Rocket with his tranny.

I would like to compare the 260v toneslut against the 245v for volume or headroom wise. Mine is very pedal friendly as well.

Hey guys, Not that we need more options but - I think that Skyboltone has had good results with his 235-0-235 tranny and I know that Allyn has mentioned that he has used the 280-0-280 tap to get more girth out of a Rocket.

For me it means that the variations in the AC line voltage in different spots or for that matter at different times in the same spot might be a bigger contributor than the percentage difference seen in some of those transformer options.

For myself I've seen the AC crawl up from 115 to 117 volts to 121 or 122 volts, over the past 20 years here locally. I am aware of this because measuring the AC outlet voltage was one of the first labs in my AC circuits class at the local University, in the late eighties. There was one guy that made quite a fuss about the new US 117 AC volt standard replacing the 110V we had all grown up with.

Ultimately, you should be able to use any of the above transformer options and build a really great amp. You can always tweak your component values or use a power conditioner if you want to hit an exact value.

One option for you guys over in Europe is to use a VOX AC-30 Tranny. It has a 280-0-280 secondary and they have dual primaries for 120 or 240... or is it 110 and 220 volts?

hey guys, thanks a lot for the insights, i guess i'll get my set thru toneslut... their PT being 240v. makes things easier for me...

hey RJ, could you get your transformers made with multiple primaries???

I could get these transformers made with multi tap or alternatively 240V primaries... I can get just about anything anyone would ask for. However, at this time I sell very few transformers on your side of the pond and it would cost both of us a pretty good chunk of change, For now, I'd suggest going with the Toneslut iron. They are some good guys and i think he keeps the Euro-tranny on the shelf.
