2 X 12" cab recommendations?

Post by Mark »

I did notice the thread below about cabs that HAD made and what he prefers. I don't really care for the eccentric, just the effective.

What cab design do you guys recommend for the Dumble clone amp. I would normally think it shouldn't be anything too special, but what cab size is recommended, what do you guys recommend solid wood (and what type) or plywood, what material is used inside the cab for acoustic dampening, what is the preferred thickness of the baffle board etc?

Thank you for reading my thread. :D
Yours Sincerely

I've played through 3 2x12" that I really like.

One is an old Peavey VTX combo amp I converted to a Dumble HRM. In fact I've done 2 of these and installed Emi Swamp Thang and Tonker.

The second is a Steel Sound from an ebay store that's apparently gone. It's a fairly large 2x12 with a 1/2 open back, birch ply. I have warehouse speakers V30 and G12H copies in it. Sounds great with any amp.

The 3rd is an Avatar 2x12 with a V30 and G12H. Belongs to HiGain on this forum. I played through it at his house, excellent cabinet, sounded great with Dumble, TrainWreck and Fender amps though it.

I also have some 1x12's. The Lopo line from Ebay is pretty poor no matter what speaker I put in it. It just sounds a bit conjested. Another is a Thiele from Boogafunkcabs.net with an EVM12L, amazing cab. I also have a Lopo with an EVM15B and it too seems a tad conjested.

Checkout ted webers stuff. i like Alnico speakers, ted makes a g12-65 with an alnico magnet which sounds amazing. i like mixing a dark bassy speaker with a brighter one

Also ted's 2x12's are nice because you can make it a closed back or open back using just a screw driver, so some added versatility is nice :)
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

I made the mistake of trying a bunch of cheaper speakers before I started using both the Celestion G12-65 and EVM12L. They are a must in my opinion at this point (there are a several combos that others like that I have not tried). I make my own cabs for myself and locals pros around my town but they look like the usual dumble clone 2x12 but I have found that solid pine cabs sound much better (maybe because they are lighter and resonate more) to me. I also prefer a floating baffle for these cabs. Hope that helps. If you want to make your own you can check out mine for a guide. The site is fairly out of date but it will ge the point accross.

Just to offer a 'clean' suggestion, as most guys want that overdriven dumble sound. I have an Avatar box with two THD speakers in it - longhorn and vintage. In every clean situation (jazz, blues, country etc) the box and my amp sounds great - very very sparkly. I could be happy with a Dumble inspired amp just for the clean.

Could be an alternative to the EV speakers because it also rocks out quite nicely (not saying EV don't) - but not like the g12-65's.

Thanks for all the replies. Tone Junkie I liked your stuff, very nice.

I don't know what to think of the Weber stuff?

Ted's stuff has received some bad press over the years. My own personal experience is that I have a Weber signature 10" speaker that really suits the amp it went into. I don't have any further experience than that.

Dear Tim

No I never did. I was supposed to go to an amp shootout in the Gong, but I over-booked that weekend which displeased my wife, which is fair enough.

I did contact Stu about hearing the D'Lite much later but he wasn't all that interested, again which is fair enough. Tim if you are curious about hearing the D'Lite give me a call and we'll see what we can arrange, or have I assumed too much?.
Yours Sincerely

Hi Mark

I'd love to hear the D'Lite. We'll try to work something out, if you like, over the next month or two. Would be nice to compare the Ceriatone OTS, I've good things about the D'Lites.

I tried the 1265 weber and found it to be to bright (not the same as the G1265 Celestion) and broke up to early. Hope that helps

I've found that some of the older celestion 65's break up very early too. Maybe weber have based it on a well worn in vintage 65????
