ODS advice sought

Hello all, I am on the verge of ordering some form of ODS likely a Ceriatone HRM in 50w. I want to know that I am not going down the path of disappointment that my Mesa Boogie Mk3 was. So much of the approach seems the same. The use of the high efficiency 12 the high gain the shared EQ. What can those that have done this share. Ultimately I am after a high gain amp that is touch sensitive and will give some tones beyond the more classic styled amps I own.

If you're wanting something that will work great for YOU I strongly recommend having an experienced builder from the board here do an amp for you. You would spend more, but with the Ceriatone you're more or less stuck with what you've got, whereas if you have one built, it can be tailored to suit you. If you live near a builder the process becomes even more personal. That said, you could probably turn around and sell the Ceriatone if you had to.

I just realized that I've made the assumption that you wouldn't be building/tweaking yourself. If that's not the case, the ceriatone might be an ok place to start.

If you really want to get into this as a project, scratch building an ODS was a long and difficult project but I learned a ton.

Unlike the Mesa the D style amps have more overtones, don't require a lot of EQ to overcome the darkness, a wider range of overdrive settings, project solo's better because they are less compressed and have a better "feel" in the touch sensitivity.

Thanks for both responses; I have built a few amps so I will likely tweak this amp if required. To be honest I can’t give the time for what Nik charges to build it myself, I have an 18watt that needs completion that I am having a hard time justifying that labor. As my wife correctly suggests I should be playing the thing, I hope she doesn’t find me on here. Heisthl you give me hope particularly in the touch sensitivity of this amp design. I have spent most of my time with vintage style amps because they work as an extension of my guitar. That is what I hope for in this amp.

You might want to consider the Brownote D'lite as well. They have a forum there that looks to be pretty helpful like this one.

Do you still have your Mesa MkIII? I modded mine into an ODS and it sounds great, although it took a lot of work. They aren't the easiest candidate for a mod, but all the basic architecture is there. I built the loop into a Dlator, and reconfigurated the reverb. Mine has become my #1 gigging amp, and the studio stuff I'm getting out of it is great.

I recommended the brownnote super deluxe 44. The one I built is the best amp I own.

to avoid "going down the path of disappointment", and if your location is in the U.S.A., I would recommend to ask Brandon ("Bludotone") to build a custom made amp for you.
