Chassis material thickness?

Post by Ripthorn »

So I came across some 52/40 .072" aluminum and was wondering if this would be suitable for a chassis. I have access to a shear and a brake to cut and bend it myself, plus it would save me a good bit of money, not to mention a custom sized and drilled chassis. So my question is if it is thick enough.

.072" should be fine. The shop that bends my chassis uses .06, and it's plenty sturdy.

I'd say it depends on how big the chassis will be and how big your transformers are.

A bigger chassis needs to be stiffer and large trannies need a lot more support than smaller ones.

Look in the Trainwreck Files section; there is a layout of the express chassis in there.
