New Express Combo build

Post by M Fowler »

Well it has been a learning experience figuring out the layout I needed, drill holes and building inside this combo style chassis.

I will build a pine cab for this with 212 celestions G12H/Vin 30 pair.

It is running 6L6 at this time and will decide what tubes I want to run later. It was guiet on fire up and good active tone circuit. Will try it on a better speaker cab then my test cab I always use.

I used my broken ceriatone face plate until my new one arrives from front panel design in aluminum.

Chassis is from Dana Hall 18w style. Trannies from Mojo PT jtm45, OT 6k with 4/8 ohm taps, boards from Joebob, Bourns pots from Apexjr and I built the cap board.

Otherwise it follows the latest express layout. Bias is at -38v.

Not that odd for a combo amp.

Tried some 6L6, KT66 and 6V6. They all sounded good, but think I will use the 6V6s in it for our gig next Saturday. Mounted the chassis into my Line6 xl 212 Flextone cab that has two eminence speakers. Used the same mounting hole and will install an additional brace on lower corner for each side tomorrow. Day off President's day, thank you very much. Will also make a rear cover for it as well. Darn camera quit must be the batteries, will get some tomorrow and take a few pictures of the Line6/Express combo.

Tim,

Here is the dusty Line6 212 cab with the TW express bolted in. I will add more bracing to support the bottom of the chassis and make cover. Faceplate is on its way.

Its all good. The cab will clean up fine and I am not out any money. Whats the difference if the Express is put in a Marshall style cab or this Line6 that looks like an Ampeg or Vox. The Line6 badge will have to come off or not?

I was going to get a red 212 combo but then decided maybe I should build one, and finally I decided to go with what I had sitting around.

I think the Line 6 badge should stay, just to confuse the "tone geeks" in your audience.

"Dude - listen to that guys tone! How the hell is he getting that from a Line 6?"

Lookin good Mark 8)

I agree with Wayne. The old wolf in sheeps clothing. You could have a lot of fun with that amp with a Line 6 logo on it

Yep - just like the old Toyota Corolla that used to go flyin by my house every day with the Ford 302 in it!

I wonder how many dumb shmucks will run out and buy Line 6's 'cuz they want to sound "just like that guy we saw at the bar last weekend"

Evil, isn't it?

Thanks guys, I agree for now it is going to the gig this way and maybe later I will change it out into a new cab.

Back in 1980 I built a 1972 vega with 350 and narrowed 9 inch rear and smoked many people with it. Give away was the rumble of the headers though.

Boy the EL34s really ring in a combo situation but the short 6V6 work vary well. I don't have any vibration dampers (tube rings) or shrink tubing to try. Maybe a plate infront of the tubes. I do have the preamp tube shields on.

Firstly, when I said odd I was just marveling at the tubes sticking out.. I have never seen one made as a combo all apart.

OK. I have an empty Line6 cabinet just like that. You are a cruel, and evil genius.. and I really like your style!

My drummer had an Austin Healy Sprite with a 289, and a 9" rear. That was not fun! I used to have a Porsche with a 383. That was more fun!
