What speaker have you had success with in an open back cab?

Has anyone tried the 12” ET65™ speaker from Warehouse Guitar Speakers. Just wondeing if it compares well to the Celestion or not.

I am using a Weber 15" Bluedog. It is a great speaker. Very woody and organic sounding. I use it with an 18 watt, D clone, Liverpool and an Express. It handles them all. Sounds bigger than a twelve but not harsh like some 15s can be.

Of those that didn't like it were the ones that have experience with the real deal.
Those that liked it I suspect don't know what the Celestion 1265 sounds like.

I have a V30 and CL80 Warehouse speaker and they seem very good to me.

But I bought them when they were first on ebay and only cost $22 each.
Now with the prices he is charging, not that great of a bargain on a lot of them.

For low wattage (less than 50 Wattss) amps I use a single Celestion Alnico Gold. Really open AND harmonically complex sounding. The alnico Blue is way to dark sounding and is weak on the bass.

For 50 and + amps I use a Matchless a 212 G12h30/G12M25 config. cab. Does ad some color however. Best results for Dumble style amps (Fuchs TDS and Twinklelland) EV12L 212 tuned cab sounds the best. To my (and my fellow bandmembers ) ears. Does justage to the player, the guitar and the amp.

It sounds like you prefer the Celestion G12-65, but in an open back combo cabinet? Just curious.

I have a D'Lite 22/33

G1265 in open back cabinet sounds really nice but at real high volumes with this amp it got a little "loose" in the low end. A 2x12 would do better.

EVM12L Reissue in the same cab fixed the "loose" low end and definitely can handle any volumes produced by this amp comfortably. More balanced across the frequencies than the G1265. Still breaking in as well.

I like them both ... just prefer the EVM at live volumes.

I don't own a 1265 of any kind, although I would like to try one.

Just reporting chatter I have seen.

Currently I have a EVM12L in a 2x12 paired with a WGS CL80.

Not too bad but I need to find a better spkr for the #2 spot.

That was my experience. I liked the WGS version OK until I broke down and bought a Celestion. They're completely different sounding speakers. OTOH, I really like their V30 clone. Very well balanced speaker with no harsh clipping at all.

CD Dist sent me a stack-o-Jensens to try out. Right now I have a Jet Blackbird in the amp and though it sounds nice and lively clean, initially the distortion is a bit fuzzy. The amp seems to lack that whatever-it-is where an overdriven note sort of goes over the edge. Can that be a function of the speaker, or should I consider tweaking the OD trim pot or the trim pot I put between the PI plates?

CE also sent me a Jet Tornado, a P12N (with the bell) and a MOD 12" speaker (they claim is a low seller because people see the low price and think it's cheap). I wish I had a more scientific way to go about this, but considering the subjectivity of this all I guess I'll just play each for a while.

I wish they'd do the same thing with Celestions (i.e. send me an assortment of them to try out for a month).

I wish Celestion and others would do this as well, but then I'm not even in a position to get Jensen to do it!

Here's a thought on the "scientific" side: This *is* a subjective thing, which is why the frequency plots, etc., won't tell a person the whole story. So for perceptual data like this, in my profession we often use "panels of experts" to help hone in on what are key differences and similarities. In this case, you might consider allowing people on this list who have good ears and some of the "classic" speakers (G1265 and EV12L for example) to pay you for shipping, and we put together sort of an evaluation form that each of our experts uses to rate the speakers. After an evaluator rates the set, they send you/me/whoever their results, but forward the speakers to the next participant. Then we put all the info together and publish it here. I would guess if we had 5-10 people sign up to do this who had good ears and these classic speakers to compare the Jensens to, we'd get some really good info.

I'd be game.

2X12 Hellatone 30 (Celestion G12H 30)
Lots of bottom, smooth mids and mild top end. If you want glassy top end, you might want a different speaker or to pair one of these with something else.

I feel...
If I'm getting the clean sound I want... the prob is in the distortion it's self. When set correctly the OD will then balance nicely to the clean. The speaker will break in little less chime and a bit more mids as it breaks in.
If your OD is to smooth you get lost in the mix and sound too "80's or yacht rockish". A touch of harshness can give the impression of more drive at a lower gain setting.

But Don't expect the Blackbird to sound like a V30 eg. nice midrangy lead tones but no chime on the cleans.
All the vintage blues/silvers I have played don't sound like average celestions, eg V30 Greenbacks and the 65's. They sound closer to the Blackbird with a touch less clarity???
