Blind Lemon wrote:as far as your Heads Up your right and wrong. The same people that are getting in over their heads have access to the Internet as all of us and that fact is effecting a lot more people. And your smart enough to know this and I can't(?) believe you made the statement, but the yo-yo writing the check is the one who is keeping you, me and Joe PUP winder in business.
I don't mean to get in yer face about it, that's just me. Why pick a side? I can see the big picture, I've been on both sides of it.

The yo-yo writing the check: They want lots more for a lot less. I place a big helping of blame for that on the Internet. The guys who really make out on the 'net are the guys with big warehouses full of imported shit. Point, click, the guy's 'bot sends you an email that it's on his dock ready to be picked up by UPS.

So, point, click, stroke me, stroke me. I'm not tryin' to be rude, I wuz just born that way.

Then there's the poor bastard tryin' to manufacture a quality product here. A quality custom product? It ain't point and click. If it is it ain't custom. We gotta deal wif wannabes, tire kickers, bullshit artists and time wasters of every stripe. We gotta patiently respond to every bullshit story and generate a quote for every request as if every tire kicker is a payin' customer. I'm here to tell ya, they ain't. Payin' customers, that is. Man, don't I wish I could just build a big ol' pile o' stuff and wait for the orders to roll in.

The bullshit factor figures in. Don't the market eat hype wif a knife and fork? I haven't quite figured out the bell shaped curve regarding hype. Try to be humble and you'll get buried under all the advertising noise. Hype yer shit just right or stick an iconic brand name on it and the market will gobble it up like it's chocolate ice cream. 'Course Mark knows what a sidecar is so he ain't quite so easily bullshitted. Let's move on to the other end of the scale, push yer hype too far and you'll be widely acclaimed as an asshole. Tubegarden...

I'll summarize: Build McAmps (or McPickups  ) and you'll make McMoney. Bust yer ass tryin' to turn out something outstanding and you might starve for your art.

It's all my bullshit McOpinion, of course. Pick yer way through the dark humor and ignore the harsh parts.

Dude it is defiantly all good here.

The bullshit factor is huge, I have come to find out that the market segment that buys custom amps is the well off and gigging musicians. Can you guess which group subsidizes the other. The guy that has a day job and decided he would pick up the guitar again or one of my brothers friends who is looking for a "hookup" I just sort through fast and tell them to bring money then we'll talk. I had a guy want me to build him a Fender BF Twin, I gave him a price and he choked (I knew he would) and he said he could get a REAL BFT Reissue a lot cheaper. I told him if that's what he wanted that's what he should buy, but that's not what you ask me for. I know a gigging Musician that has one and hates it, guess who's getting the Reissue and who's getting the custom. 8) 8) 8) That said, I can afford to be a turd sometimes I got a good day job and just do this for the pleasure of it.

I aint no genius.....by a long shot.....ask my wife.

Pretty bizarre, ain't it? I would have thought at some point it would reach equilibrium or the public's appetite for bullshit would go the way of the CB radio craze. (Goin' way back, ain't I?!) It's a bizarre world, one where mass media and soft product is King and reality seems less and less important. Less important that is until it comes to the money. But then soft product seems to have obliterated real wealth so I don't know what to think.

There's the iconic brand name thing. I can't believe how many musicians want a "nice new reissue" rather than a "cranky original that will need work." Hey, those "cranky originals" have been beaten without mercy for creepin' up on 50 years and they're still goin'. Send me a "cranky original that will need work" and it will go for another 50 years. Maybe it will need a tune up ten years from now but it will be good to go when I get through with it. Better than a reissue without a doubt. How many Twins got "matched tubes" back in the day? How many were run into just as many cabinets as they had cables to hook up? How many were brought in for service if they still made sound?

SF Twins are the best deal out there. Remember the "Beer 'n' a Baggie" thing. If some dude needs to take care of his head you're gonna get that Twin cheap in this economy. Cheap enough that you can afford a cap job and new tubes... and maybe have coin left over fer a beer 'n' a baggie!

Bein' a turd is just a hobby fer me. I'd love to do it full time and be able to make money at it. Talk radio, perhaps? Nah. I'd say sumthin' obnoxious like "Nappy-headed ho's" and they'd promptly shitcan my ass. Twice, to be thorough!

Gee, Doc... thanks fer the vote of confidence!

I can see it now, I'll have my own studio/rubber room. I'll do the show under careful supervision. In a straightjacket. I'll get me one o' those big ol' tube mics that makes me sound like I got four or five testicles. I'll pay me one o' them engineers and a producer to run the show, four big knobs on an old radio console might be more than I can figure out.

I'm pretty sure I'd be able to afford it. What do they pay Howard Stern? $125 mil? No wonder they ain't makin' money!

Well you can't spell "CRAP" without "RAP"

How 'bout Kid Rock the M&M country crossover wannabe? I could listen to Kid Rock five years ago when he was semi-original. These days I can't stand him and he's ruined Zevon and Skynyrd for me as well.

Country is of course where old rockers go to die. Seriously, crack that market and they'll be playin' yer old 8 track cassettes long after you're dead and buried.

On the other end of the scale we got these squeeky little girlies doin' their early Madonna impression with a country sound track. Whadda ya get when ya combine CoUNTry and POP?!!

So-o-o-o?
Are they hammered dogshit or are they making your Lester & you some proud wood? I'm in the market for some PAF styled Humbuckers but can't justify buying the Tom Holmes or anyone's $600~$800 a pair p'ups without some serious gushing.

As for "Dude it is defiantly all good here." Did you mean someone challenged your current degree of well being?
Perhaps you were reassuring CJ of your acceptable surroundings and meant,
"definitely". I like a good quip as much as the next fellow but it reads as though Thingfish were "relucidatin'" for our "edificashums". It's still early here and my coffee isn't quite ready so I trust you will kindly excuse my ill mannered jabbering. 8) {In my lifetime it's never been all good}

I haven't had a chance to install them yet. I'll report after ..........

Lots of small winders and I can't recommend (re: won't) any of them. I would just make sure you and them have a clear understanding of what each side is expecting. And be prepared to wait, most have a pretty liberal return policy......you won't get your money back, but most will work to get the PUPs you want.

Good hunting.............hows the coffee?
