another transformer question

Post by guitarsnguns04 »

I have been researching trannys lately for my next build and was looking for some advice from others. I am looking to build a 22/33 watt ods build and was curious what iron to use for the best tones. I know it is subjective but I guess I am looking for what you may have built that you think sounds amazing. It will be 2-6l6 or 2-6v6 ..I would prefer the 4-8-16 OT. I am considering the dynaco otdo50 OT.. As far as the PT I am wide open...325-0-50-325/6.3/5v.. I used the brown note iron for the last 1 and was really satisfied but was looking to try something maybe a little sweeter if possible. Any and all comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated

You do realize that the 6V6 and 6L6 power tubes require a different primary impedance, right?

If you want to be able to run both those type tubes you would best off buying the BrownNote OT with the dual primaries.
I believe the one he is selling now is a lot bigger then the one he offered a year or so ago. Double check to be sure.

yes I do. I am considering just going 2-6l6 or 2-el34 also. I havent built or heard a 2x el34 ods type yet and I prefered the 6l6s to the 6v6s anyhow. So just a 2xel34 transformer opinion or a 2x6l6 option would be considered also. Thanks for the response

I'm pretty sure that you can run the EL34 tubes with the same transformer used for the 6L6's.

There may be something you have to change like the 1&8 tube socket wiring or the screen resistors though.

Structo I understand exactly what you are saying. I guess my questions is more like this..I am going to build it one way 2-6l6 or 2-el34 one or the other..what is the preference...6l6 or el34 and what is the prefered iron that you used? I am noit going to incorporate any footswitch so the 5v tap will not be needed..any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.I read my previous posts they are misleading and not worded very well..please exuse my bonehead ways..lol

Well I can't help on the EL34's because I haven't tried them.
The 6L6 give it a full bodied tone with not too much high end.

The EL34's from what I understand give you a bit more crunch in the power tube distortion.
The EL34 can run at much higher plate voltage so I'm sure that would be an influencing effect.
The 6L6GC has a max Va of 500 while the EL34 is 800.
