Project amp Cabbed Up

Post by glasman »

Here is a quick photo of one of my holiday boredom amps.

The inspiration is obvious :).

FWIW, I finally found a spray adhesive that actually seems to work. 3M 80, the only one that I have found that holds.

I would like to eventually build a cabinet like that --- are there drawings available? VERY nice looking amp!

The 3m 80 was for the tolex on the cabinets. I normally use CP adhesive, but the sprays are so much easier and Home Depot is now carrying the 3M 80 and thought I would give it a try. Only problem with it is a can does not go very far. Spray both pieces, wait 5 to 8 minutes and stick it together.

The rough sketches were drawn up and the rest was calculated on the cabinets as I was building them.

These were odd ball chassis and I doubt you would ever be able to find them, they were 7x17x3 that I doubt about 10 years ago as a close out item from Antique electronics.

I have looked recently and I cant find reference to the numbers anywhere.

DOH! I shouldn't stay up so late :D That answer was a little more obvious than I'd like to admit. Looks nice, in any case.

We used to use the 3m 80 spray.. Hated it...The big issue we had was it tended to separate... Leave an amp in the car on a hot summer day and it would lift and bubble...Also that stuff ain't cheap either... Dupont makes a upholstery landau top adhesive... The best thing about it is it's designed to work in spray guns...spray it on the cab and on the tolex have a cigerette and stick it on...The best thing is it takes a while to set up so if you have to lift a corner it won't take the backing off.. I remember the 3m stuff setting up quickly and you had to heat it alot..

All the reasons I don't do my own cabinets (except for prototypes) these days. :). I also request my contractors to use hide glue. I figure if my 43 year old super reverb still looks good, so will the Glaswerks in 40+ years.

I have not used the Dupont stuff, but I know that the CP Adhesives t;ex glue will also lift in time. Arizona is a great test bed for tolex glues. If it lasts a year in my garage it must be ok :).

Yes I use the 3M adhesives in my work in construction and yes they seem to fail in direct heat from sunshine.
Fortunately it is only used as a temporary glue to hold something in place before it is buttoned up.

I have not found a spray can adhesive that does not fail in this regard.

Just so were cool not taking a stab at your work..Just a heads up..I wish I could find someone around here that does good tolexing.. We've tried several people and I am never satisfied.. I wish I could.. Although once you get it down.. It's really not that big a deal..For project type amps prototypes that stuff is fine..

No offense taken. I have been building cabinet for over 25 years, and just don't have the time to mess with them anymore. Just needed a couple of quick cabinets to house these two amps and didn't feel like spending hours tolexing the things (using CP).

FWIW, the 3M77 is great for carpetted cabinets.

Yeah man...the last thing I want is for someone to post a little project they did and get blasted for the type of glue they use.. Especially someone who does a good a work as you.. a know win situation for everyone... I kind of thought about that after I posted it.. Anyway originally this was not my intent...
On to better things..
