Mallory Electrolytic Substitute

Post by tweedeluxe »

Since the price of TC75 & TC78 caps has dramatically increased, I am searching for suitable substitutes for my Rocket build.

I like the Nichicon caps, but for my first Trainwreck build I want to use the correct 20uF and 40uF values, as absurd as that sounds on a 20% tolerance part. Yes I'm OCD about this build but I'm still not willing to spend $20+ on a filter cap.

I would prefer to not use Atoms because of a previous failure (brand new cap too).

Does anyone here have any experience with the Jensen Electrolytic caps as sold by partsconnexion.com?

They make axial 20uF and 40uF caps rated at 500v. They're a bit smaller than the Mallory's and have lower ESR.

Plus, they're currently about half the price at $10.90 and $13.75 . Thoughts?

I think RJ has Tech caps in stock - you could send him a PM.

How about those black F&T caps? Try Metropolous, Mojo, RJGuitars, Antigue Radio Supply, and the list goes on.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've used Tech-caps and F&Ts before and have never had a problem, but since this is my first Trainwreck build, I would prefer to use the exact part values, ie: 40uF instead of 47uF, as silly as it sounds for a component with 20% tolerance ratings . . . I know it's ridiculous .

As far as I know, tech-cap, nichicon, and F&T do not manufacture high voltage 20/40uF caps.

I just want the build to be as close to the real thing as possible - I think I'm going splurge for the Mallory's after all - even if it means another couple weeks of saving. I was just excited to make my final parts order for the build today but now I can't afford it. The Mallory's have doubled in price since I priced them a couple months ago.

I saw those ugly Jensens which seem to be good quality and just wondered if anyone else had any experience with them.

If I were you, I would use a 47uF Tech or F&T and write a '0' over the '7' with a magic marker

I got an amp under development and I'm gonna use those AES made can caps built on the old Mallory machines. Uber expensive but what the heck. We all live forever so why not go for the best.

In my next build which I haven't decided on yet, I plan to use those F&T caps.

Made in Germany right? We know the Germans make good stuff.

My dad made me and he was German!

But, if I was cloning an amp and trying to match components that the original used, I wouldn't let $20 stop me from doing it.

You're talking about the CDE caps right?

Spend the money.

Yes, there is something to be said for German quality, though it ain't what it used to be. The only bad out of the box filters I've ever had were F&Ts.

Funny. Heard that before. Can't attest to it myself but I've read some complaints about them. Oh well.

I can categorically state without hesitation that I've had xicon's blow up at under rated voltage and no load to speak of. That's my only review.
