Another chassis source ?
Where can I find a chassis to build an Express? I did some searching here on the forum and several threads recommend AmpBuildersParts.com. I went to the site and all I find under "chassis" are cast aluminum Hammond project boxes.

What you need to do is click yer heels together three times, raise yer right hand and say, "Allyn I need a chassis". Or click on the contact tab at AmpBuilders and contact him.Tin Ears wrote:Where can I find a chassis to build an Express? Allyn=Allynmey here so you can look up any of his posts and use the PM tab.
I see Allyn's chassis ad in the Classifieds here has dropped off the page, otherwise I'd paste a helpful link.

I just received one from him. Nice work!
Re: Another chassis source ?
Tinears,
PM Allynmey and ask for a Trainwreck Express chassis and he will set you up.

I also forgot that RJ has a good chassis too look him up at the link below. http://www.rjguitars.net/
If you like to drill or punch holes you can go with a blank one from Bud Industries or Hammond but they are not the correct 17 x 8 x 2 size.

Re: Another chassis source ?
Thank you everyone for your replies. I'm looking to buy a bare chassis without any holes. I prefer to machine my builds myself. I've built several amps using the Hammond 16x8x2 chassis. The iron for an Express will be heavier than any of my previous builds so a sturdier chassis made of heavier gauge material would be nice. If need be I guess I could stuff the amp inside a Hammond chassis and reinforce it a bit to make it a little sturdier.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Re: Another chassis source ?
There was a guy on ebay selling chassis as well but I think they are the same as ones being sold on this forum?
If you look through old chassis subjects you will find we have discussed this issue many times. You can look up my posts and that will show you were the chassis discussions are.

Howdy, Tin Ears-
In addition to the flimsiness-factor; exacerbated by the SERIOUS weight of the spec. transformers; My (and others) experiences show the TWE to be layout-critical. Even a quarter-inch in the wrong direction can spell instability.
If you choose to "Roll-Your-Own" chassis, I humbly suggest fo;;owing the parts placement-layout as closely as possible...Seems EVERYTHING was done for a good reason with these amps. Not trying to dissuade you from DIY, but I discovered that this is one time where re-inventing the wheel is fraught with potential peril! Hope this helps...

Re: Another chassis source ?
I like to do everything myself as well. But... nothing compares with the slick-ness of a ready made chassis. It makes for a more pleasant build. It's a few more bucks for a lot less hassle.
I really dig an amp where everything is where it''s supposed to be, no extra holes, no second guesses. Even if you managed to track down the extinct 17" wide Bud box it's distinctly second fiddle to Allyn's chassis. Consider also that it will take two tries in many cases, by the time one buys two cheap-o Hammond boxes one is well on the way to having paid for the good stuff in the first place. Just my $.02...

Re: Another chassis source ?
Roger that..... Allyn's are as good as you'll find and actually worth the price. As Casey noted, it does change the flavor of a build if you know that 90% of the drilling and guesswork are taken out of play....

Re: Another chassis source ?
One of the reasons I want to machine my own chassis is so I can use this AC socket with an integrated fuse holder. I've used this on all my builds. This allows me to have everything on the back of the chassis flush so there's nothing protruding out the back that can accidentally get broken off.

Re: Another chassis source ?
Allyn's chassis are quite sturdy; will hold up under the transformers very well. His chassis are pre-drilled for all the front and back controls/connections, and for the tube/screw holes. Board/post screw holes and all the transformer holes you do.
AFA that type of power IEC connector, the one Allyn has drilled is much smaller. If you're using a stepper bit or have an IEC punch, it'll work.

Re: Another chassis source ?
I use Allyn's chassis and cut out for the IEC socket on them at an angle as there isn't much room between the fuse holder and the corner for the IEC to go in straight. I use a dremel with the smallest cut off wheel and small file. You can cut the hole rectangle and do not need to put the angles in as that is covered by the plug itself, know what I mean.

Re: Another chassis source ?
Since I haven't gotten a response I'm guessing that I can't get just a bare chassis. Are there any other options out there? I've tried Kombo King (or something like that) a few times over the last year or so and have yet to get a reply. At this rate I think I'd be better off buying the raw material and finding someone with a brake.
Re: Another chassis source ?
So far I have only seen 16 x 8 x 2 hammond or bud chassis. But that doesn't mean you can't get a blank chassis from a custom metal fabricator locally.
