I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
I've been modding old Fender amps for a looong time. I've tried just about everything at one point or another just to see if I liked it. Well, one day I tried a Super Reverb mod that Dave Funk suggested. Let me tell you it TRANSFORMED the amp.
That same Dave Funk mod ended up in the Blueverb which kicked some serious ass against some other boutique amp builders in a shootout on another post. A few months later that same mod showed up in one of the other boutique amp builder's circuit (nothing like an asskicking to get you to re-examine your assumptions). I believe he even takes credit for its development, too. That amp builder's loyal following are MARVELING over the II series of his amp which is merely the old amp with the Funk mod.
Dave Funk is a smart guy. If he speaks, IMHO, you will serve yourself well to listen closely.
Oh, you want to know what the mod is? Ask Dave Funk or go to his class.
BTW, When guys tell me I should build a bass amp, I tell them they should listen to a Thunderfunk and come back and tell me what they want me to improve upon...NFS.

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
hmm...this is a dumble question but since we're on the topic of reverb, Dave will you please add your two cents on this matter.
The SSS and ODSR have this in common- reverb driver, a reverb return amp, and a reverb/dry mix amp circuit. The odr schematic found on the site has one drawback of the ckt; the OD volume is not coupled to the reverb singal volume, so if the OD volume is increased above the Clean volume level, the Reverb signal gets lost and no reverb is heard. If the OD level is set below the Clean signal level, the reverb is too much. Dave will you help to get a schematic up for a working sss reverb circuit and one for the odsr circuit where the od volume and reverb volume are coupled? I/we would be very grateful for this information.
Thanks.

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
If he ever shared anything worthwhile I might agree but it seems all I ever see is either teasers or a sales pitch for $180 power cords. I don't doubt he has some good knowledge but if there's two tons of chaff for every grain of wheat...not worth it imo.
Early brewers were primarily women, mostly because it was deemed a woman's job. Mesopotamian men, of some 3,800 years ago, were obviously complete assclowns and had yet to realize the pleasure of brewing beer.
Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
why are you kissing ass to Dave on a Trainwreck forum? shouldn't you be tossing KF's salad? just a thought. IMO Dave's just a guy who makes money on complining information and charging a premimum to people to lazy to search for it. Before computers he who had the most schematics won! Now it's easy to share knowledge!!! You too can collect schematics and make observations to improve a circuit and create a mod. or amplifier with a new name.

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
I don't think you guys gave Dave a chance. Yes his announcement that he was offering tutelage for a fee was an early post. And some who hang out here may have found it a valuable one. Not everyone has the time, energy or inclination to root through a lot of posts to determine where the real knowledge lies. For every valuable piece of information on these types of boards there are lot's of input from guys that don't know what they're talking about, off topic post and yes the flames which drive everyone away.Fischerman wrote:If he ever shared anything worthwhile I might agree but it seems all I ever see is either teasers or a sales pitch for $180 power cords. For some, gaining a lot of knowledge over a short period of time under the supervision of an expert is very valuable. That's why teachers have made a living in society as long as they have. And successful ones make a lot of money. One of my professors from college is worth hundreds of millions of dollars all of that wealth earned from sharing what he learned in his research...teaching. For those looking to be 'taught' Dave's post may have had a lot of value. And for those looking to help this community of amp builders survive, by adding new members through teaching them can be a very good thing.
The way I understand these type forums is that they are an exchange of knowledge and information. We all exchange information because we get something back. Most of us want to see a community of like minded people thrive at the art which we value so it may flourish. That's still an exchange. Even the guys who say information should be free are not really giving it away for free. I see an awful lot of information sharing that is really an exchange of value. There are the smarty-pants types who gain pleasure and a sense of well being from showing how smart they are. It is their way to try and fit into the community and demonstrate their own self worth. Nothing wrong with it, but the recognition they believe they achieve is still and exchange.
I believe that this community should focus more on the knowledge and less on the motivation for sharing it. Plenty of guys don't post really good knowledge because this community is way too hostile.
I also think that the ones criticizing him would do well to try to understand why successful amp builders rarely post on this forum. Your tag line is perfect. You are proud that you drove off Dave Funk before ever giving him a chance. I don't agree that you should be proud of that.

I would appreciate it if you kept discussion of your sexual fantasies out of my posts. UGGGH! SOOOOOO many angry people out there. Guys please just take a deep breath and relax.....ok? It's Christmas....errrr..... or was yesterday.
It's true Dave hasn't really contributed over the time he has been a member here. After all the cloner bashing that has gone on, maybe he was just being cautious. Maybe he is just looking to make a buck. Point IS we don't really know! I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a bit. Please do the same.
Thank You
Greg

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
smitty shouldn't this post be in a different forum? or at least a dif. branch of this one. If im not mistaken Dave didn't create or design a trainwreck amp so all i'm saying is this post is in the wrong place. everything else is fact as well. he hasn't made anything that hasn't already been done before. and sells a collection of schematics for top dollar that you can download for the web for free if you look. i'm open to being wrong if you can prove it.

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
You do realize Dave is the only person KF trusted to build Trainwrecks outside of himself, and is the only person that Ken explicitly discussed the details of building Trainwrecks with, AND was the only person that he supplied the parts, boards, iron, etc... to?selloutrr wrote:If im not mistaken Dave didn't create or design a trainwreck amp so all i'm saying is this post is in the wrong place.
I just cant understand why on a Trainwreck specific board all these people are just hell bent on shitting on the only living person that actually built Trainwrecks other than Kenny.
A lot of folks here just amaze me.
Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
Didn't Dave Funk actaully build original Trainwrecks for Ken? He was beat up pretty bad by some of you guys on another post in this same forum. I was trying to help this community mend a broken fence. IMHO, I think some of you guys may owe Dave an apology.selloutrr wrote:smitty shouldn't this post be in a different forum? or at least a dif. branch of this one. Which forum would you suggest for a post that recognizes the experience and intelligence of someone who actually built and repaired original Trainwrecks under Ken's supervision and has shared his own knowledge in the past on more civil forums? I think you guys are missing a big opportunity to befriend an important member of your community. I would think that the onus is really on us to foster the relationship, not Dave. He's got the knowledge. What can we as a community entice him with to part with it? I would suggest that warm, welcoming and pleasant posts in response to his might be a good start.
Furthermore, I don't understand what gives some guys the right to speak for the entire community and chase a guy like Dave away and then wear that like a badge of honor in their signature. Where does one derive this unilateral authority to engage in activities that weaken the whole community?
How can you say that Dave hasn't made anything that hasn't been done before? Have you been inside all of his amps? Do you know that or are you just making this up? I think if you say something like that then maybe you are on the hook to prove it rather than just say it and ask someone to prove you wrong. Have you no sense of your own credibility?selloutrr wrote:everything else is fact as well. he hasn't made anything that hasn't already been done before. and sells a collection of schematics for top dollar that you can download for the web for free if you look. i'm open to being wrong if you can prove it.
I would also ask why you would say something like that if I didn't already know the answer.
The point is that ALL of us have a TON of things in common. We are all in pursuit of the knowledge that will allow us to create great tone. We are a community with huge agreement and miniscule disagreements. I have found that people tend to share ideas with friends and protect secrets from their enemies. Why make ANYONE with so much in common an enemy.
Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
how much is Dave paying you? or is he family or close personal friend? it just seems weird how much you are proctecting him. I've bought his book of fender, it was a book, but not much more or less then gerald weber's book, had I got to thumb threw it before I purchased it I would have passed with the ability to search for the same schematics. but to someone i'm sure it's just what they needed, so props. I have a mixed opinion on his school. It's neat that he's encouraging people to build an amp but just following directions doesn't make someone an amp builder. just cause I put together a model airplane when I was little didn't make me qualified to get a job at bowing building planes. But I do respect a guy trying to make a dollar, and wish him the best of luck in the current crisis. It's fun to see you argue with such passion, I'm just curious why? Happy holidays!

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
All I have to say is where was Dave when these guys were struggling to figure out the Express and Liverpool amps?
Making schematics and layouts from pictures that had been found.
He registered over a year ago but did not post.
Then all of a sudden when most of the stumbling blocks have been hurdled, he shows up promoting an amp clinic plus hawking a $180+ power cord.
Just sayin'

Re: I think Dave Funk is a smart guy
Hmmm. You act like Dave owes you some secret insight or something. If Dave was trusted by Kenny to keep his mouth shut while he was alive, maybe Dave still thinks he owes it to Kenny to continue to keep a few things to himself.
All I know is if I were Dave (well, Dave Funk since I am a Dave), I'd be damned if I'd give anyone here the time of day, with the amount of crap certain folks have given him since he did start posting.
If you dont like what he's selling, fine - but jeepers, there are some serious attitudes showing up around this joint lately.
