Edcor TX's anyone?

Post by Clyde »

Has anyone used these? I see on their site they have a nice selection of PP and SE OPT's. I'm very tempted to try them.

I'm using both PP and SE Edcors. Standard from their catalogue as well as customs. Great stuff :!:

I built a single ended stereo HI FI with there outputs. Sounds great, lot of HI FI guys are saying these are a great bang for the buck. I'm going to be using one of there outputs for a hotrodded champ I'm building.

Edcor Transformers - Testing them out...

Post by RJ Guitars »

I've bought a hand full of Trannies from Edcor, I can only say good things about them as far as fit, finish, polish, and customer service.

I kinda like them because they are a small company and also are located here in New Mexico where I live.... which isn't really technical criteria for a recommendation.

Recently I had them custom wind a couple iterations of power transformers for my Trainwreck Inspired stuff... they look so good I bought the part numbers and had them added to the catalog... I'm just now getting down to building with those custom trannies and we'll see how they work out.

I have not had much luck using their output transformers because they are physically huge and I can't easily fit them in on a Wreck sized chassis. The HiFi community seems to think they are very good sounding but I don't know how that will apply to us yet. Has anybody got any experience with their output trannies in a guitar amp?

Thanks,

rj

So, which power xfmr was that?

Their 25W and 50W 4/8/16 output xfmrs look very cool. So, they're large you say?

How are they versus Hammond if anyone knows? Hammond is my cost-effective choice since the US dollar has taken flight.

I've used both the XSE series and the XPP series in guitar amps.

I replaced a Hammond 125ESE in a tweed Princeton cirucuit I built using their 5K:8ohm, 15w SE OT. I thought it sounded better clean than the Hammond. Much more sparkly and bell-like. The amp sounded better with the Hammond cranked.

I recently used their 15W PP OT, 8K:8ohm in a Brown Note 18W Lite IIB build I did. It sounds pretty good, but I bet the 18W iron from GDS, Trinity, and Brown Note sounds better.

A couple of gripes: they have the fast-on soldering tabs and these have to be well insulated. It is a shock hazard to have B+ exposed outside the chassis. They will not make their transformers with flying leads anymore :(

Also, they only offer one secondary. They used to offer 4, 8, and 16 ohms on the secondary as a special order, but no longer.

Still, Edcor's transformers are relatively inexpensive, well made, and made in the US.
