OT Q

I've read around this fabules forum, to plan at build of a 50W version of #124.

I realize that the OT is (or seems to be) a matter of personal taste. The standard recomendation for an OT is a bassman I think.

However this seems to be a rather broad "statement"

So my question is this:
What is the best OT for 2x6l6 50W, CONSIDERING cost/benefit?

I live in europe, so this should probably be taken into account.

...and on that note, what the best OT for a 50W #124, and the cheapest solution?

.......oh, and would the Hammond 1750M be any good?

I just bought a Fender Prosonic OT for my 2x6L6 D'Lite.

12. PROSONIC. For repairs or build an ass kicking 50W combo (or head) with a pair of 6L6s. Upright end bell construction. Standard push-pull primary with three wires; red center tap, brown and blue plate leads. Somewhat unusual (for a Fender...) secondaries make this transformer useful for those of you with Marshall 4X12"s; black common wire, green/yellow 4 ohm tap, green wire for the 8 ohm tap, yellow wire for 16 ohms. Measures approx. 3.75"X3"X3.375" tall. Mounts to chassis with four screws, mounting centers 3.5"X2". GENUINE FENDER PART #049009. $69.

It weighs about 4.5 lbs.

It's listed under guitar amp parts, Fender Amplifier Parts, and is number 12 on the list.

The thing about the Bassman OT is that it is most commonly a 2 ohm secondary.

You should be able to find Fender OT's in Europe.

+1 on the Prosonic. I just put one of these in my Bassman 10 conversion a couple of weeks ago. It really made a difference from the the stock OT. Keep in mind the OT in the Bassman 10 is not the same as a blackface or silverface Bassman head.

Thanks for the answers. The prosonic seems to be rather cheap, so I guess that would fit the bill for cost/benefit, especially if it sound good

I see some talk about Mercury Magnetics trafos. They have quite a different pricetag thou. It seems there's a general consensus that they are very good. However, are they worth the money, or are they something you buy to get the very top noch products, when you have money to throw away?

I have found very little info on Hammond trafos, which is what primarily (i think) is available here in europe. Are they any good?

How about the products from weber?

I have heard some good about the tweed deluxe trafo from Triode Electronics. Anyone have experience with this company?

....also, can anyone describe the difference in sound between these trafos?

I haven't used the Mercury's but I hear good things about them.

Overpriced? Probably, I think they go by name recognition a great deal, so that if someone looks inside and sees the Logo on the xfmr, they say, oooh, you have a Mercury!
They are pretty!

Heyboer is another manufacturer.

I had thought about using a Hammond but there were so many choices I got confused and with the Ultra Linear xfmrs the output didn't look easy to deal with as far as switching the impedance on them.

Any of those will be suitable.

I don't know who makes Fender's xfmrs these days, possibly made in China. Although it doesn't list a manufacturer anywhere on the tranny or box.

This will be the first tranny swap I have done so all I can tell you will be the difference between the stock Heyboer and this Fender Prosonic tranny.

I was looking over the Weber site. They sell some heyboers. Would it be the HY018343 I should use for 2x6l6?

Structo - how does that PROSONIC sound?

Has anyone tried Weber's own OT's? I was looking at HY018343.


On a side note, what kind of PT should I use? Is it along these lines:
330v - 0v - 330v @ 200mA
6,2v @ 5mA

Do I get different volts on the divider string, if I use a bridge rect? I nknow I would have to do the bias circuit differently, but I think I have that figured out.

I am quite pleased with the Prosonic OT.

It really beefed up this amp and I am sure added some power.

My PT has these specs and I am running 3 x 12ax7 and 2 x 6L6GC.

Heyboer # HTS-8816EX, it is a custom wind for Brown Note.

It is an international PT.

You can probably get by with 200ma but I know the D'Lite was updated to 300ma.

It's also nice to have the 5 volt taps to power the footswitch relays.

325-0-45-325 @ 300ma

6.3 V. C. T. # @ 6 Amps

5 V @ 2 Amps

I would guess between 4K and 5K.
