Sorry guys, but I can't resist this one....I've been following this thread with some interest....

In my corner of the world, there's a max sum for everyone to pay of 200$ per annum for health care - doctors, hospitals, physio, shrinks- whatever is your need. After that it's all free. I don't have to save to send my kids to uni - it's all free! No tuition fees! Imagine this - you don't need rich parents or a football grant to go to college.....? High school is a basic civic right, unless you just give a hoot! I hold a BSc from the mid 70s which would have been totally impossible without this system.
This is in general terms the system of most of the old western Europe, - give or take a few points her and there....
To some of you, this is truly synonymous with PURE SOCIALISM
To most europeans, this is the way it works.. it is most certainly not a system without flaws, - and equally important to us - it is LIGHTYEARS away from true socialism. It is called a social democracy
Here, at the opposite side of the globe, we once had a similar system, at the time we also had the highest standard of living in the world (early 1960's). Sometime in the '8os things changed and we embraced Chigago school economics with a vengence, out-'Thatcher'ing Thatcher and out-'Reagan'ing Ronald, we became a test laboratory for right wing economic thought.

It hasn't worked. Don't be tempted.

A progressive politic (free schools, free health care) makes for a better society.

Less violence, less people falling through cracks, mui happiness, less jails.

Last time I checked, it isn't "free" those who have stepped up to the plate in life and have become successful by their own convictions and drive. If one is being ?forced? to be patriotic and ?give? to those less ?fortunate? then it is coercion. I have no problem helping my fellow countryman in time of need, I believe we ALL need help at one point or another in our life, I don?t believe everyone is entitled to the same thing I have due to my persistence and struggling I had to do in order to achieve my personal success.

I spent many days getting up at 4AM to go running because it was the only time I had to get a workout. Then it was back home, showered, packed my lunch, be at work by 6AM, work till 3PM, go home, grab a sandwich, grab my books, go to the college library, do my homework, go to class, leave at 10PM then go back home. Repeat the sequence next 4 days for the next 3 years.

I was single, paying child support, making rent and a car payment ? all while making about $14/hr. The thought of me holding my hand out to the government to ?help? me never once crossed my mind. As a matter of fact, I would lose my apartment and sleep in my car before admitting defeat.

I didn?t like my earnings at the time. So I educated myself, got a better job with more pay, make well into the six figure category, bought a $920,000 house this year (this is my third home) with a PROPER MORTGAGE (20% down, 80% financed) and didn?t cry about the monthly payment because you know what? It?s a 30-year, FIXED 6% rate!

If you believe in Socialism, you must therefore believe in slavery:

Slavery is the systematic exploitation of labor. As a social-economic system, slavery is a legal or informal institution under which a person, the slave, is compelled to work for another.

So if I?m forced, by taxing the hell out of me, to give my earnings to those who are either too lazy, stupid or just plain old losers, I?m being used as a slave ? I?m definitely NOT OK with that my friend.

I don't believe in Socialism.

I believe in universal coverage for every one.

I believe in fairness.

I believe that paying taxes is a small price to pay.

And, i do not need a million dollar home.

I hardly think 35% to 70% of all money earned in wages is a small price to pay for anything, and I don't believe in universal government controlled anything unless one is seeking mediocrity. If one wants everyone covered by health care then the rule should be that everyone pays the exact same amount for that health care per person. With everyone participating in one system we should be able to get the price down to something everyone could afford. Part of each individual’s contribution should be used to prosecute those that commit fraud in the system and some should be used to help pay for the education of more doctors to affect the supply and demand. It wouldn’t hurt to throw some of the dough at R&D of equipment and drugs too.

There should never be a sliding scale which punishes the more industrious of a people. That is reverse Darwinism and it is counter productive to natural selection which benefits all species including mankind. Charity services should be provided by voluntary charity giving not mandated government taking. There is a right way to have medical coverage for all, but too many bleeding heart zealots want to take a quick short cut to a mirage hiding a debacle by putting it into the hands of government which has proven itself inept at running any program both in the U.S. and Canada not to mention the rest of the world.

So it's "fair" that I must pay more in taxes because there are lazy SOB's who want entitlements?

Funny how those who don't earn as much as others are so eager to take the dollars from those who seek to better their personal lifestyle.

We wouldn't have a national debt or this bail out if the Federal Reserve still had to back the money with siver or gold. They can just print, print print. Gentlemen, we're heading for a national debt with "quadrillion" behind the number. I say let the firms fail and file bankruptcy.

Steve my man...

You think you are King Shit...

You are fooled by money, greed ,power, ego and status...

When that million dollar home is paid off, you'll probably want a 100 million dollar home...only makes sense...

You'll be working your white ass off like there is no tomorrow...trying to get to the top of the food chain...

On the way there, you may get burnt out and suffer from depression...

You'll then loose it all and walk the street naked...

Only then will you experience how the poor live...

Wow Tubetwang. You're a psychic. You've laid out Steve's whole future life. Or, maybe this is just wishful thinking on your part. If so, man, that's mean.

Hey, you shouldn't assume that someone who is currently doing well hasn't starved in the past. Don't forget Scarlet O'Hara's ...as God as my witness....." speech. Many of us human beings have gained chutzpah from adversity.

I got everything I have from my own hard work too. There is no shame in not wanting to live poor the first time, or ever again. And, there is nothing wrong with not wanting the government to make you poor despite your hardest efforts to prevent it. Your comments seem to indicate you harbor a grudge against those in the upper crust. That is a sad thing for you and is the reason you are walking the streets naked. Oops wait a minute, I don't really know that do I. What is foolish about making and having money? Didn't your kindergarten class learn the grasshopper and the ant story?

Look, when I was scrounging my way through college working in steel yards and refineries I couldn’t get a grant, any government cheese, any housing assistance, Nada, zip, nothing. You want to know why? Because that was the 70's and it was the era of reverse discrimination give aways. I didn't fit any of the categories that qualified for aid.

During that time, I built oil rigs with two fellows. One a was Vietnam veteran who got squat from his country and the other a South Vietnamese veteran who received $29,000 cash from the U.S. government to start a business along with thousands of others from his country when they arrived. Ever wonder why there are so many Vietnamese store owners in this country? Now you can imagine how that American vet felt about that.

I believe give-aways are just wrong. I never got anything from the feds and I don't want anything. Nor do I want them giving my wealth to others. It is not the job of the Federal government in the U.S. to do anything but maintain a military and build interstate roads. That's all I'm going to pay them for period. If we took all the wealth and spread it out evenly among all humans on earth we'd all be starving. Not my job, ain't gonna do it without a fight.

Now all that said, you'd be surprised to know that I give huge amounts of money annually to my selected charities. Of my own free will. America....Land of the free, home of the brave. Not land of the oppressed.

bnwitt,
First of all I won't even comment on Mr. Tubetwangs rant. Hard work, determination and a sense of self worth is what drives most successful Americans. Those who don't have drive are always looking for handouts, bailouts, entitlements or conveniently blaming those who ARE driven and want to tax them into oblivion because they feel it isn't "fair."

I know this has been around a while but it?s still relevant today:

I?m a bad American
I like big trucks, big boats, big houses, and naturally, pretty women.

I believe the money I make belongs to me and my family, not some midlevel governmental functionary with a bad comb-over who wants to give it away to crack addicts squirting out babies. I don't care about appearing compassionate.

I think playing with toy guns doesn't make you a killer - I believe ignoring your kids and giving them Prozac might.

I think I'm doing better than the homeless.

I don't think being a minority makes you noble or victimized.

I have the right not to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird or make me mad.

This is my life to live, and not necessarily up to others expectations.

I know what SEX is and there are not varying degrees of it.
I don't celebrate Kwanzaa. But if you want to that's fine; just don't feel like everyone else should have to.

My uncles and forefathers shouldn't have had to die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come disrespect ours, and make us bend to your will. Get over it.

I believe that if you are selling me a Dairy Queen shake, a pack of cigarettes, or hotel room you do it in English. As of matter of fact, if you are an American citizen you should speak English.
I think the cops have every right to shoot your sorry butt if you're running from them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word 'freeze' or 'stop' in English, see the previous line.

I don't use the excuse "it's for the children" as a shield for unpopular opinions or actions.

I know how to count votes and I feel much safer letting a machine with no political affiliation do a recount when needed. I know what the definition of lying is, and it isn't based on the word "is"-- ever.

I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you qualify for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans, etc., so you can open a hotel, 7-Eleven, trinket shop, or anything else, while the indigenous peoples can't get past a high school education because they can't afford it.

I didn't take the initiative in inventing the Internet.
I thought the Taco Bell dog was funny.

I want them to bring back safe and sane fireworks.
I believe no one ever died because of something Ozzy Osbourne, Ice-T or Marilyn Manson sang, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to that crap from someone else's car when I'm stopped at a red light. But I respect your right to.

I don't want to eat or drink anything with the words light, lite or fat-free on the package.
Our soldiers did not go to some foreign country and risk their lives in vain and defend our Constitution so that decades later you can tell me it's a living document ever changing and is open to interpretation. The guys who wrote it were light years ahead of anyone today, and they meant what they said -- now leave the document alone or there's going to be trouble.

I don't hate the rich and I don?t pity the poor
I know wrestling is fake.

I've never owned, or was a slave, and a large percentage of our forefathers weren't wealthy enough to own one either. Please stop blaming me because some prior white people were idiots -- and remember, tons of white, Indian, Chinese, and other races have been enslaved too -- it was wrong for every one of them.

I believe a self-righteous liberal with a cause is more dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude.

I want to know exactly which church is it where the "Reverend" Jessie Jackson preaches; and, what exactly is his job function.

I own a gun, you can own a gun, and any red blooded American should be allowed to own a gun, but if you use it in a crime, then you will serve the time.
I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it makes you mad, then invent the next operating system that's better and put your name on the building.

I don't believe in hate crime legislation. Even suggesting it makes me mad. You're telling me that someone who is a minority, gay, disabled, another nationality, or otherwise different from the mainstream of this
country has more value as a human being than I do as a white male. If someone kills anyone, I'd say that it's a hate crime. We don't need more laws! Let's enforce the ones we already have.
I think turkey bacon, turkey beef and turkey fake anything sucks.

I believe that it doesn't take a village to raise a child -- it takes a parent with the guts to stand up to the kid and spank his butt and say "NO!" when it's necessary to do so.

I will not be frowned upon or be looked down upon or be made to keep silent because I have these beliefs and opinions. I thought this country allowed me that right.

I will not conform or compromise just to keep from hurting somebody's feelings.

I'm neither angry nor disenfranchised, no matter how desperately the mainstream media would like the world to believe otherwise.

Yes, I guess by some people's definition, I may be a bad American.
