I have seriously been considering a dumble build for a while now, but I am pretty confused. I am pretty sure the ODS is the model I want to build, but there are so many different builds.
Can anyone either clarify these things for me or point to a post/posts that do/does?
-What is HRM?
-What is a D'lite, how is it different than an ODS?
-Some history on the ODS, explanation of different time periods.
-What exactly is skyline EQ.
-I have heard that the SSS is considered by some to be the holy grail of dumble amps. Is there an ODS that is considered most desirable?
-Is desirable amp overdrive achievable without having to crank the amp, or is the desirable overdrive of these amps more based on a combination of the overdrive circuit and power tube distortion?
-Have any BOM's been compiled?
Sorry for the number of noob questions... any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Dumble Info for a Noobie
Yeah I built a Brown Note D'lite 44 kit that uses 6L6 power tubes.
To me this has become my favorite amp.
THe overdrive channel is very good and the clean is more of a cranked type clean, at least on my amp.
I can get real clean at lower volumes but when it is turned up there is that classic saturated power tube tone.
With the master volume on these you can crank the preamp volume and then have the master way down and get a good OD tone at bedroom levels.
I have at least four distortion pedals from tube screamers to fuzz and I don't really like them with this amp. The OD channel is that good.
I do however use a reverb and delay in the FX loop.
Very good amp and a great first build for me.

So is the Brown Note DLite a 6V6 version of the ODS?
How does it compare to an ODS?

Re: Dumble Info for a Noobie
The D22 is the 6V6 and the D44 is the 6L6 model.rfrakes331k wrote:So is the Brown Note DLite a 6V6 version of the ODS?

The way it comes it is suited more for the 6V6 tubes, but there is plenty of info here to get you where you want to go.

Re: Dumble Info for a Noobie
I think I am off to a pretty good start. I've gotten most of the hardware in. I've read that Ken Fischer tended to use whatever parts he had on hand to build his amps. Is this true with HAD? Just curious.
I've asked my father(a EE) and a few other EE's about this. If HAD used a coupling capacitor rated at 400v, and I use the same brand/style cap but with a higher voltage rating, like 1600v, should there be any noticable difference?
Also, it is near impossible to find 300uF electrolytics rated at 300v or higher, which I assumed would happen. Is the ceriatone PS layout a valid option, or is there a better option for the earlier style PS board?

On some components yes, but many he was very picky about. Plate load resistors were always RN65, coupling caps varied but were usually PS6 or similar. Most of the others are all over the board.strato17 wrote:I think I am off to a pretty good start. I've gotten most of the hardware in. This seems to be one place the HAD used what he could find.
