Sovtek 5881

Post by Steven_nl »

Hi Guys

One of the members of the Ceriatone forum was talking about using Sovtek 5881 power tubes biased at .33mV instead of JJ's.
He described the tone as more Larry Carltonish. a more "splatty" attack.
I'm not a 100% sure what he means by that, but it might be what I want.
For me the OTS has a very hard attack, almost like a pop. I feel this is a Twin Reverb thing (maybe I'm wrong).
I would prefer a somewhat softer attack. Do you think I'd get that with the Sovteks?
By the way, I wouldn't want less clean headroom.

Thanks
Steven

Considering Larry runs his tubes at 700V and has a Marshall style PI, I'd say all comparisons are off....

JJ 6L6 sound the worst of all the 6L6 types to me.

Get a set of Winged C tubes....

I have a set of JJs and a set of EH 6L6s... Not sure which quartet sounds worse! :D To be perfectly fair, I have an amp with JJs E34Ls, and those tubes sound terrific to me.

I wonder if the "pop" is the characteristic chirp that everybody raves about. :D

The pop is not the same as a chirp, it's more gutteral and less marshmellow-y than a true chirp

Ok, seriously, the chirp is kinda upper midrange attack. Very cool.

I went for it
I triede the Winged C's but they dind't work in my amp at all (well not for me).
I put in a set of Sovteks 5881's, got out my multimeter(yes I do have one hehe) put them on 35mV and bingo. Works great!!
