6v6 OT

Post by soje »

I'm learning my way thru a #124 clone. I'm not set on that specific version, just trying to explore the build(s)/sound of these amps :-)

Anyway, I've build it with two 6v6's wich of course isn't "right", but that's what I got on hand.

So going with that, what are optimal HT+, and what OT should I use? Deluxe or?

It's probably been covered before, and I've searched around, but what I find seems a bit vague(or maybe I'm thick :-))

Anyway thanks for anyanswers :-)

Deluxe iron will sound wimpy. Vibrolux is the way to go. (Both PT and OPT)

Isn't that OT 4k? I'm thought 6v6's would like something in the line of 6-8k.

Hmm, I've found a schematic of a vibrolux with 2 6v6's but no info on the OT :(

PLease educate me :)

Brown Note sells an Vibrolux style OT with 4k and 8k primaries which can be used with 6V6's or 6L6's. The website only lists them as available in a set with the PT. They are not cheap.

You might want to reconsider building the amp for 6V6 tubes.

They really aren't the correct tube for this amp and will change it's characeristics.

Why limit yourself for the price of a couple 6L6's?

Point taken :-)

I have seen a couple of threads with people using 6v6's, so I wanted to try that since I already have a couple of those and a cheap deluxe OT. Just to get and idea of what this thing is about....

Thanks for your replies!

If it were me, I would use a 3.4K to 4K 50W transformer with 4 6V6's , a PT that would get you 410 to 420V and a half power switch. Then you could also use it with 2 x 6L6's or EL34's.

And I built a 20W 6V6 amp a few years ago with a 5AR4 rectifier that still knocks my socks off everytime I hear it.

How would you compare the tonal difference of the two tubes. I have not tried the TS, but I thought the JJ's were pretty decent, nice chiminess to them.

Well I meant other than the D'Lite 22, what other D clone uses 6V6's?

The Brown Note OT would be the way to go and it would leave your options open. A lot of guys wire the primaries to a DPDT switch so you can swap tubes and flip the switch, bias, and play. :D

The Dumble Overdrive Specials that use 4 6v6's use Bassman Iron, for a pair I'd Imagine whatever Brown note uses would suffice, although being a proponent of bigger Iron is usually better, you can always use bandmaster/vibrolux iron, or even bassman Iron with an 8 ohm load- which would give you a reflected impedance of 8K plate to plate- which is just what a pair of 6v6's will like to see :D .

The Tung-Sol sounds more like a real 6v6, real warm and wooly, the JJ is more akin to a 6l6, they have deeper bottom, and more chime on top, they also make more power (insert ape sounds here).

Bassman/vibrolux OT -> 8ohm load...check.....why didn't I realize that? Only now my brain kicks in :-) I even have an 8ohm speaker on hand :-)

- Glassman

What OT did you use, and what's the HT onthat amp you mentioned?

Thanks!
