Not plates

What are those 'plates' underneath the tube sockets? The purpose?

I think that's where they masked the chassis when painting it, so the tube socket shields and various hardware are grounded.

Whats with all thosee blue caps over almost every single preamp tube socket ?

Makes perfect sense...thanks.

Regarding the blue caps (which are Xicon metallized film AFAIK), I can see how there would be a feedback loop around the FX loop Return and the other cap could just be part of the FX loop (I often mount the Send coupler right on the socket since it then goes to the jack or Send Level if present). Maybe another feedback loop on V2 and/or V3 but why on V1? If these are the Xicon metallized film caps then those look to be some fairly big values...those bigger ones look to be in the .68u range regarding size.

Is that a shielded cable straight from the plate of V1 to a relay?

EDIT: See the little OD over by the PI/power tube couplers? Some kind of 'Cut' thing a la Vox?

The SSS amps I have seen make around 137 clean watts- I am guessing that they are very similar preamp sections with larger output sections- Could be wrong, I've only worked on 2 SSS amps and no dumblelands .

The mid accent switch simply puts a .001uf cap across the master volume in a bright cap type arrangement, but the ones I saw had that switch replaced with a presence control.
Brandon,
to my knowledge the orange Cris cross 300w Dumbleland as pictured above was not even built at that time,
it was the old Dumbleland and/ or even "old Satin glove" that was used;)

also Stevie had 3 big big Dumbles and a 4th was on its way,
but that last one was keept by Dr D

Tommy Shannon also did have a Dumbleland bass amp
that he got in -83, I believe it was a 300w amp,
:)
Which Big ones did he have? I know he owned SSS #7, and another black SSS later on, what was the 3rd one?

I kinda figured the 150w JB amp looked more period appropriate, but the story about Stevie carving his initials in the back of the one he liked made me scratch my head about that orange suede amp, since it does have "SR" scratched into the back pannel.

I also heard that the Black one went down, and got sent back to Dumble, when Stevie got the repair bill he told Dumble to Keep it- any thoughts on the validity of that story?
Brandon ,
I have checked,
I recalled it was a 4th amp on its way as I posted but my memory served me wrong ! ( it was long time ago )

But Stevie did have 3 big amps !
however the last one went back to Dumble when the estate was settled !

TX Flood was Jacksons old amp, not the 300SL

I just mean was the other one a dumbleland or a SSS?

I wouldn't expect that you'd know the SN# :D

Hello again,

As far as I now remember what Mr. Dumble himself told concerning the SRV Dumbles:

It all began with the 150W Dumbleland Special of Jackson Browne. It was part of the equippement in the studio he could use for free for the recording of "Texas Flood". All the "Texas Flood" stuff, that was recorded in a "Live" attitude, is this Dumbleland (sounds exactly just like the brother of the one I could use from time to time with the kind permission of a close friend), sometimes with a pedal in front, sometimes without. (BTW: All the tracks without pedal in front are very fine examples in regard of the "clean sustain").

After recording Texas Flood, SRV asked Mr. Dumble (introduced by JB) to built him such a beast. He didn't get a Dumbleland, like the one he played, because the Dumbleland Special 150 Watt for Guitar had been replaced by the SSS 150 Watt in the Dumble product-line. So what he got was a SSS 150 watt (the Silverface one from Bill's site) with some tweaks to make it sound a bit mor like a Dumbleland Special.

As far as I remeber now he used an ODS for a very short time while waiting for the real thing.

After the silverface one he got the blackface one (pics on Bill's site) and later two more, so he ended up with four (That is at least the story, as Mr. Dumble tells it).

In the late eighties he got also one of the old Winterlands and used it on tour and for recording.

So to listen to the "Live" sound of a Dumbleland Special 150 Watt "Texas Flood" is a fine example: Pure Dumbleland with- and without pedal in front (and some reverb that has been added later)

To get an idea his SSSs sounds I would recommend most of the live recordings of the mid-eighties. At this time he used (at least that is what he told himself) the SSSs as his main stage-amps and the fenders that you see on stage have been used only to drive the Leslie.

For this I would point out to the second DVD (1985) of the DVD double-pack "Live at Montreux".

Have a nice time and all the best

On a similar note did Colin James (Canadian blues guitarist) have a SSS.

His sound on his first record to me sounds like one. Very influenced by the "SRV" tone at the time, the high end is different from the ODS.He is quoted as using a dumble. Not just as another recorded example but also for cataloging these amps.

One thing about these amps I'm yet to see what the tone filters do and their circuits. :?:

Nick,

Yes, Colin James had one. See page 4 of this thread. :)
