Brand of 12AY7?

Post by mss1 »

I finally received a couple of EH12AY7s to start testing the latest version builds, but wonder if the sound of these new production tubes is up to the task. Has anyone compared them with particular NOS or used tubes?

I am leary about the common complaints that newer production stuff can be somewhat fizzy sounding.

I am currently finalizing the assembly of a Studio and version updates on my 4-4-0, so knowing what to expect of these tubes in advance would really help.

There's an easy way to judge new tubes... buy a good NOS tube then compare. 12AY7s aren't terribly expensive which is strange... I see 12AX7s and 12AT7s 100:1 to 12AY7s from my sources.

I like the old GE grey plates. Last time I checked they were around $20.00-$25.00 each NOS. You can buy one NOS tube or two new ones.
